My '38 Chrysler is a convertible and they only made a few hundred of them, and only a handful remain; so anything that is specific to the 38 convert is pretty much unavailable. At all. One thing that was pretty tired was the door sill plates. They were made of a very thin material- maybe aluminum. The embossed (I think) design, intricate and once very pretty and was worn, torn, and tired. Here they are as they were when I got the car: I couldn't see any way to fix them, and finding another set was never going to happen. I heard about a business called Doorsills. Little ad in Hemmings, no web site, a couple of mentions on the web and that's it. I called him and was told that he hadn't done my exact sills before so I needed to send one as a pattern, and the wait would be ~ 6 months. Seems he's an aircraft instrument tech by day and a sill smith at night. The price he quoted seemed quite reasonable, so I sent him a sill and forgot about it for awhile. Fast forward just over 5 months and here's what arrived: They are perfect. Nothing else on my car is, but my doorsills are. I've only had this one interaction with this vendor, but based on this I give him a plug here and a big thumbs up! Doorsills Llc N Haledon, NJ (973)423-1196
Yep- Brand new. I sent him one old one and he made mirror images for left and right sides. I think they were photo etched. The back had just a little bit of br***/copper looking surface showing.
