I have a currie housing with the new style large bearings. What type of car or truck could i get backing plates off of. I went to a local for guy and had no luck.

If you have the earlier BIG bearing style ... a lot of the mid 60's and up full size Fords and Mercury's have the large bearing backing plates. I used a set off a 1965 Ford station wagon on my 32 project. They are 11" X 2.25 and the drums and all the inner pieces are easily available. They also have the self adjusting feature.

I have the large bearing new style rearend in my 31 sedan. 66 to 74 Ford Broncos have brakes that are 10 inch diameter that bolt right up. They have the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. Jeffs Bronco Graveyard sell new brake ***emblies with backing plates for $250. 248 437-5060.

  5. The standard duty car 9" was typically small bearing. The HIPO or CJ cars had the big bearing. Now those are big $$ rear ends, so you are better off to look for a 60's, possibly 70's wagon, like Deuce Roadster did for what you need. ranchero should work as well.
That is also a common swap for the 57-59 Ford wagon guys before you could buy drums.
    They used to be unavailable.

You should be able to find them at a U pick yard for pretty cheap.

Matching backing plates to the offsets on the axles can be a time consuming PITA. I would ask Currie which ones fit.

if you need drums, backing plates, shoes, cylinders and hardware I'd look into a drum brake kit. I think they are $399.

Not sure when the new style started, but Bronco's started used them in '74 and 75. They also used the old big style those same years. New style got small brakes, old style got big brakes. Not sure when the old style was phased out. Might try looking at 80's trucks, when the last of the 9"s were used.
