I have a Cad500 motor in the 40 Coupe we're building. Upon getting the front suspension changed to a modern set up I found that the oil filter, in its stock location, hits the steering gear. I had been told that I would probably need to run an oil cooler with this motor due to the tight engine compartment and small radiator space, so maybe this issue with the oil filter is a blessing in disguise. My question is, what type or brand of oil cooler would you guys recommend? How about locating it - any tips? Thanks for the help.

Due to the limited size of available radiator space and the cooling needs of the Cad engine, I would stay away from the normal pratice of mounting it in front of the radiator. I have seen a type of oil cooler for earlier rods that is long and about 5" square and mounts on the outside frame rail under the main body area. I was going to use one on an earlier project but went a different route. I don't have any actual experience as to how well they work but it's an idea to look at.

I like the gm method of using a coil in the radiator, myself. Oil temps under 185* can impede efficient combustion. Sharing the coolant in the radiator assures that you stay in the same neighborhood as the coolant.
If that isn't an option, I like to dig up a commercial unit from a heavy equipment parts dealer. Last one I scored was about 10 x 16 with AN-6 fittings, about 4 passes of 1/2 ID tubing. If you must go with a brand name, look at Derale. http://www.derale.com/engine-oil-coolers.html Just stay away from anything using barb fittings and hose clamps. Spend a little money here.

Where ever you run one, use the biggest you can & ignore the GVW rating and go big.Get the correct adaptor that uses a heat regulated spring to open or close the flow.I have found on my 460 powered PU, when it opens up, your oil pressure will rise 10-15 lbs due to cooler oil. They sure make an engine last longer.
