so i beat out all the other applicants and got the job at the GM Proving Grounds in ****ord painting the GM show cars. i'm not real fond of driving an hour and a half to work and an hour and a half back so i'll have to move before too long (as soon as i find a buyer or renter for this place). so what are some good car friendly neighborhoods out that way with a reasonable cost of living. i'll need lots of garage space so i'll be looking for a place with a barn or big garage or a reasonably priced commercial style space.

Hey man, I've got the hook up for you! My brother moved to Melbourne AU, and his house in Westland is for sale (along with every other house in the neigborhood ). Seriously, congrats, glad to hear that everybody isn't leaving Detroit!

  3. Congrats Mike! I know the last few years have been a roller coaster!

****ord has plenty of homes for sale but some are pricey. I'm in Hartland and there are some deals out this way for homes with pole barns. Howell area also has some good homes with acres and barns. I would check with England real estate on M59 or do a search online. Plenty of hot rods out this way.

Congratulations! Hopefully you will be GM direct, as everyone else is treated as s*** of the world. ****ord is a nice site and it sounds like you will be in a very good work area.

There was a T.V show on that said housing in Detroit is the cheapest in the States right now....they also said that you had to be very careful on where to buy.

Good luck with the new job!

I am sure there is some truth in this. It also means that we are blessed with the home equity plumeting faster than a North Korean missle.

how do you mean? do you mean GM employee vs. Contract employee?? i've been with GM for 11 years now. this is just a transfer essentialy. i've been in production in Lansing (several plants) since 99. spent a year and a half in Grand Rapids before that at a plant they sold to Lear before spinning off Delphi.
the new job is a "skilled trade" so i'm moving from production into what they are calling an apprenticeship (even though they wanted a minimum of 8 years experience to apply for the position and preferred someone with an ASE Master Certification in Autobody and paint repair) that will lead to a journeyman position.

tell me about it. i'll be driving for a while as i owe probably twice on my mortgage what my house is NOW worth. or at least what i think i could sell it for. there are bigger nicer houses than mine in this area that are vacant with asking prices around 60% of what i owe on mine.

I saw the posting for that at my plant and thought how cool it would be to do that job. Congrats on getting it.

  14. Good for you Mike! Look under real estate/Detroit on Ebay... There are lots of houses on there for like $500... Just replace all the wiring, plumbing and all the windows and you are all set... PLUS there are all kinds of empty concrete slabs all over the neighborhood to park cars on...

    Good to hear, Brimmy.

My place is exactly 1 hour to 96 and 23 so it will depend on how far you are willing to drive. If you live south, 23 is a ***** at 4 pm to get through from M14 to about 96. Too much traffic. Don't know about coming from the north or west. East gets you too much towards the D via Novi and $$$.

I'd stick to Howell if you could find something. Highland would be the cats *** as it is just north.

Let me know when you start, I've got badge access to the grounds. Hell, I can DRIVE on the grounds if I've got my door magnets on! I know engineers that have been there 20 years that can't do that!!

What building? I usually do 24 for testing.

I know just where that pole barn is. It'd only take you about 20 minutes to MPG from there. Not a bad deal AND you could rent out the other bays to all of your buddies that park their fine collections at your house already!

none of my friends have money. that is why their **** is sitting in my yard rusting instead of being worked on.
