So it sounds like everyone and their mother has problems with their cheap repop Stewart Warner wings guages. Does anyone have any suggestions to other similar cl***ic styled guages? Autometer? Cl***ic Instruments? How is their quality? Price point? I would love to get some original Stewart Warners but dont have the cash right now. Going in a '31 Model a coupe, '32 dash. Thanks
I've used several sets of SW Wings with no problems, not always perfect but the price compared to somthing like a 6 gauge set of Cl***ic Wings gauges is something to think about.
I like the quality of the AutoMeter's I ran on my last car... but they can't seem to bring themselves to paint the needles white. (I had the the ones with the brushed stainless-looking dials with black numerals & needles... they fit the car OK.)
We are working on an 2 5/8" American made set that has similar looks, with 270 degree sweep, domed lenses and high torque stepper motors. They are in development, so it will be a while before we can get these done, probably this fall. Right now we are having trouble finding a lens source. The company that does the lenses for our Woodward series gauges is having trouble holding a tolenance on a smaller gauge. Right now we only have 30s -oem style sets. We are also working on a dished dial. So many ideas, just not enough money to get them out there quickly, at least we are keeping the work local, and not overseas. Mark
Try www.omegakustoms.com Made in the USA, new so I have no feedback. Traditional I think. Kevin RodDoors
Do the math on the total cost of your gauge set, then look at what NOS ones go for at swap meets, the cl***ified here and other places. You can find quality gauges (older Stewart Warner) if you dig around.
My project is still out a year or two. I'll wait to see the gages you come up with before getting someone else's.
I agree... In my opinion, the best gauges ever made from a quality stand point are the late 40's and early 50's S/W gauges. They are just nice pieces... That said, the S/W gauges made in the latter 50's and into the 60's are still much better than their current offerings. If you are patient, you can get a nice set for around the same price as new.
http://www.cl***icinstruments.com/ take a look at these, I was looking around for some gm tbi injection stuff for a non hamb project and found these last night.
I should say that I have a current set in my '38 as well... They look good, but I have had two different oil pressure gauges as well as two different tachs... The rest have been fine.
Actually my Speedo in the 32 didn't work initially (electric pickup type) So I called S-W and they gave me a couple of things to check. I went into my shop to start their diagnosis and it decided to work and has been fine since - that was 1 1/2 years ago
We've got S-W Wings in our car going on four years now. They work fine, are consistent, I've got no complaints
Clock people have them. http://www.clock-keys.com/pdf/Categories/gl*** domes & related.pdf has all sizes, although 2-5/8" domed is $3.25 http://clockparts.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3488751 has 3-3/8" for $1.75 and 2-3/8" for $0.95.
Thanks I will check them out. its either re-tool a lens, or re-tool the bezel, hopefully I can find each in existing parts. Mark
I am using all stewart warner, i needed a manifold pressure guage and had to go with the later 60's style guage but it has a all white needle, after buying 3 temp gauges that didnt work i buaght a new stewart warner, strange thing was the nuts supplied dont fit the terminals. i also buaght a repro moon tach of ebay, it looked real nice in the picture but when it arrived it looked like junk, i dont know if i should drill any holes yet to mount it, my mate got one too and the needle was loose out of the packet. a mate of mine used these pricol guages, i keep seeing them cheap on clearance tables, his seemed ok and not to bad in price.
As to using the convex lens used for clocks, they are usually too domed and look odd. Case in point, check out the "restored" S-W gauges in the original 32 Ford roadster of Doane Spencer. Getting the very subtle dome right is usually accomplished by cutting down a much larger lens (ie: 5" dia) into the diameter needed. There are several S-W gauge restoration spe******t's in the U.S. who "get"it start- ing with Bruce Abbott Instrument Restoration in Portland, Or. and John Wolf in Willoughby, Ohio. Having used both men, their work is very good. There s no such thing as "cheap" restored vintage S_W gauges, and the old adage of "you get what you pay for" is only appropriate if you know the quality of someones work. Terry
i've used cl***ic instruments before and i have a set going in the '36. one problem is they only make the "hot rod" pointer for the large gauges and the other problem is that the gauges are in a plastic case, i like the old metal bodies s/w but the large old speedo is still too small (i wanted the same size as a stock '36). but cl***ic also have curved gl***.
Im thinking about using dolphin guages. You see them on ebay.I went to their website. They're in jersey.Dont mean to hijack this guys thread .They are the cheapest ive found.Comes complete with senders. Are they any good. This might help original poster and i.
We looked at carrying Dolphin as well, then just decided to have our own made for us, here in the USA. Here is a sneak peek at what we have coming in the next month or so. It comes down to 2 things: quality and design. Price is secondary. I will say this though, there are some great retofitters out there that will install new guts in the old cans. Mark
LCD for the odometer is just way to much "back to the future" for me Shame because it looks like a great product
