Hey matt. There are actually a surprising number of shows and get togethers in the twin cities. Some are pretty good, and some of 'em will leave ya wishing you had stayed home and spent the day working on your own car. I find that the best way to find out about 'em is to just go to one now and then. There's always a few guys running around sticking flyers in your face (or on your car) announcing the next great show. It sort of snowballs like that. For me, the trick to that is: if the guy handing me the flyer looks like the kind of guy I usually try to avoid, then the show printed on his flyer will likely be one to avoid as well.
The Lucky *******s Mystery Run is a great place to start the year.
As for the car club thing; there are also clubs all over the place. Lots of 'em. So there are lots of choices pretty close to home. My advice on that topic (though you didn't ask for it) is this: go to shows. Go to swap meets. Just keep doing whatever it is you do. If you find yourself repeatedly running into the same cats over and over during the course of doing your own thing, then there's a group of dudes you already know you've got something in common with.
And on the car show and get-together topic again; the hamb has been a pretty reliable resource for me. These guys (and gals) will be plenty honest about whether a show ****s or not.
