    Knock off’s

Please educate me, on do’s and don’t do’s.

I have just bought a new set of Dayton wire wheel knock off’s, with 3 lug sweep back knock off.

And let’s here the horror story’s.

I know there are left handed and right handed threads on knock-offs. The right handed nuts go on the left side of the car (driver's side) the left handed nuts go on the right side. The best way to remember which is which is that to tighten the nuts, you are banging them towards the back of the car (as long as you are hitting a lug that is sticking up). Regardless of which side, if you remember that you'll be banging them the right way to tighten.

Also, use plenty of anti-seize or grease on the tapers where the nuts seat on the wheels or pressure plates. They've been known to seize and be a bear to loosen if you don't.

why would you expect horror stories? Wire wheels have been around a very long time. Most European cars don't look right with anything else. Just make sure you have the mating surfaces clean, and the wheel properly aligned, snug it up, then give it a whack.....no horror involved. Unless they're 22" gold plated 8" wide with skinny whitewalled 6.00 x22 tires...then there won't be horror - there will be GRIEF by the truckload.

What wondrous vehicle are you going to adorn with these beauties?

I have had many years and cars with Dunlop or Dayton KO wires. If the hubs have splines..keep them lubed. Never had any difficulties..

Yep I sure had one. I bought a 62 Corvette with the factory wire wheels. (the only other one that I ever saw with these factory wheels was on the TV show. Rte 66)

I just finished getting it repainted. I was exiting the interstate when the right rear tire came off. I was doing about 65 just prior to the exit. It tore up the 1/4 panel and the tire continued down the ramp heading right towards the 1/4 panel of a brand new Ford wagon. It just cleared the Ford, hit the curb and bounced about 15' in the air. I went to get the tire. When I returned with the tire the girl that was with me said "is this part of it"? She had the 3 bar spinner in her hand. WHEW

I was emotionally crushed by the accident and later I traded it for a 41 Ford sedan delivery project and cash. A few years later the new owner had the right front come off. I don't know who made them for GM. These were not splined. They had a bolt on hat with notches around the rim of the hat that nested with the wheel hub.

If I ever own another set the spinners WILL be safety wired!

Oh a little side note. I paid 800 dollars for the Corvette from a used car lot. The state inspection station did not know how to get the tires off to check the brakes.:D I never really looked at the wheels when I bought it at night. I thought that they were wire wheel covers. I had already made plans to use my American 5 spokes. I wish I had.

PS I'm not one to be a Chicken little. I don't very often agree with the safety police but this is a true story. Safety wire them like the race cars and all will be fine.

Nothing more fun(?) than a spinner coming loose and getting trapped between the tire and front fender at speed.Suddenly the idea of wiring them seems real good..

I did not mention what they are going on as it’s new. But thought you guys would know how to handle the Dayton knock off’s

They are going on a BLACK 2003 SSR that has some mild custom work.

Thanks for you input, I will keep checking back at this thread for more updated info.
