Hey All, I bought a running FoMoCo big block with C6 ******.(I was told it was a 460 of unknown vintage). I have bought a Ford engine interchange book, and called my local dealer for help. None of the numbers I have mean anything to the book or the dealer. So I saved my best resource for last. On the drivers side head above the exhaust manifold I have D3VE-A2A, On the p***anger side head underneath the valve covers there is a cast tag K27 and also a 201 On the back of the block stamped in right below the head is 7Y838346 and there is a 6H12 cast in the intake manifold. I can't find anyother numbers on the exterior. Thanks for your help. Gregg

  2. The D3VE is a 1973 head.
The 7Y # makes me think its out of a 77 Tbird.
I am not sure they had 460's in them though.

There should be #'s near the starter on the block.
The little #'s are date codes .

Let me look in some books..

The D3VE is 1973 and most likely its a 1973 460. Either way you have a winner and if by chance its a 429 short block you did good. There a hell of a torque engine and if you OH the motor you can look at the crank marking
    2y---2ya---2yab---2yabc =460 4 u--4ua--4ub=429

I asked this question the other day about a set of heads with the same markings that I found. and was told the D3VE heads were 460 closed chamber. If they were D2VE not so good. But if they were D0VE heads they were sought after...ghost

The 7Y838346 means it was a 1977 vehicle, it was built at the Wixom Michigan plant and it was the 838346 vehicle off of the 1977 Wixom line. Wixom built Ford Thunderbirds and Lincolns during that period. Customcab was close. It should be a 460, car 429's were gone by 1977. Sounds like an early one actually built in 1976.

  9. Yeah....what he said. :)

  10. All correct except the number 838346 probably means the 138346 VIN if it was a Lincoln motor. Lincolns VIN's start at 7 so at 100000 units the number would roll over to 800000.

Also The VIN's don't actually mean when it was built consecutively but when the VIN was produced ( car was ordered for build etc.) The cars were built in all sorts of random order depending on options parts availability etc.

BTW Fords VIN start with 1 Mercs 5

Most Fords of that vintage had a small aluminum tag under the coil hold down bolt. Dont EVER loose one of those.

Thanks for the help everyone. Aside from the obvious, what is different between a 429 and 460? Which would you rather have? Thanks again, Gregg :)

    I'll take the 460 anyday
    There's no replacement for Displacement
