Is there some tool that will allow me to probe into the oil pan thru the drainhole so that I can see the identification on the main caps? Thanks,Oldmics
My dad has a bore scope/fiber optic scope that he got from Northen Tool. Like this one but shorter http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200114274_200114274 Great for looking into spark plug holes and checking cylinders (found out my 390ci was 30 over that way ) I've only tried to look into one oil pan (SBC) to see if it was 2 or 4 bolt main but kept hitting the oil pump pickup and couldn't tell.
Yep, it's called a socket set...for what you'd spend on a bore scope, go buy yourself an oil pan gasket and 5 cases of beer...
Why not just drain the oil and take the pan off using those new socket/ratchet dohickeys groucho is talking about
Rofl! Car guys brim over with humor, don't they? Remember Tom McCahill? He almost single-handedly originated magazine car tests, writing for Mechanic's illustrated. Some guys wrote in to MI, saying they had installed a Chevy V8 in a Corvair. Said they now had four speeds in reverse and one forward. 'What should they do?' Tom wrote, "Turn the seats around." Also, he had Andy Granatelli (Grancor) hop up his '50 Ford. Tom tested it extensively and vouched that it cruised all day at 90 mph. Sounds like a HAMBer, eh?
