Allright boys- I need some help. Especially you So Cal guys. I ran across this Merc on Ebay- ( and if any of you jump in and buy it just remember I dont drive a he**** just cause it looks kool ) So I'm kicking around buying it but I can't find any history or pics of it. I googled it but came up dry. There is the one pic of Gene Winfield with it. Do any of you know or have info as to the validity of this Merc??? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1950...id=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65:3|39:1|240:1318 Let me know ASAP- Auction ends in 2 days- G-Money
The shop to shop thing for various work probably isn't far off base as a lot of the older customs went through that. It also doesn't say "when" it was in the Barris shop although George most likely didn't work on it himself if it was later than the mid 60's. If someone from Gene's shop chimes in and puts some light on it you might be able to find out more.
Doh!!! Cause that would be too easy and make too much sense!!! Then you guys would have nothin to type about-LOL. OK so if its the real deal then I think Im taking the Drag-u-la build money and going for it....Opinions???
i would ask george but he is out of town til next week.. if george did the work on it it would have been in the 50's.
just my .02 but i'd say buy it what's the worst that could happen you end up with a awesome looking car that was built by some guy in his garage. I think if it was a "fake" you could make a claim with ebay about the seller selling under false pretenses and get some of the money back.
could be an older pic or something but the description says "Edelbrock carburetor and manifold, Cadillac air cleaner" But the pic shows 3 2's with frogmouths. One of Gene's guys is on here you could PM him.
Is the reserve met at 15 grand? Sounds mighty reasonable if it is, regardless of who may, or may not have built it.
Seller also has a really nice 53 Buick listed. Spring Valley is San Diego area. I've never seen either car around town here.
Ya that threw me too. He "said " he was selling it for a friend- RED FLAG!!! Then the motor issue, no pics of the interior,.....just too many questions. So I didn't buy it. Thanks for the help !! I'll keep you posted on the next thing I have no business buying but can't resist1
Call Gene, send a pic to him.I personally think the discription as to WHO did work on it is debatable...and without pictures of the other guys mentioned,it could be a hustle....LOOK OUT! ASK FOR PROOF! i WOULD RATHER BUILD MY OWN. BUT THATS MY 2 CENTS.
Heres my take. Barris' involvement is a bunch of horse ****.**** Dean may have made the top and who knows, Winfield may have lobbed the roof off and did the taillights. As for that front end, Ill bet my *** hairs none of the above had a ****ing thing to do with it.Thats my opinion and I have no evidence but gut instinct to make these claims.
I actually know that car fairly well. Belongs to a real good guy by the name of Rob out in San Diego who tattoos and paints. The car has seen the attention by all of the aforementioned, though other than the carson top being done by **** Dean, I not 100% sure to how much the others did. There are a few things that aren't to my personal preference but a unique sled nonetheless. I'd give him a call if you have questions, his number is on the ebay post, he's a legit dude and will be on the level with you....
