This summer, I bought a 50's Westinghouse with a turquoise interior for 20$ canadian. The best thing is that it works like a charm.

My friend's father delivers parcels for a living. Since he spends all that time on the road, he gets to pick up everyone's cool garbage. He told me that he sees fridges like that being thrown out almost weekly, often with a sign that says that they work.

One more to keep an eye out for is a "Stewart Warner" fridge. I found one in a boneyard/creek fill pit and took all the badges off it. Be careful when banging and beating on them they are full of Asbesto's. I coughed for a couple days after tearing one up for the door badges.

Root - I've had this HotPoint in my ba*****t since I've moved in...about five years ago. Never thought to look in it and never thought to plug it in. A couple of weeks ago I thought, "wonder if it works?" Plugged it in and checked on it after couple of hours...ICE COLD. Thermometer in the freezer read zero, main compartment was chilly. We're moving mid October and my space goes from big ****ty ba*****t to smallish nice garage. The wife is UNstoked that I plan on taking every bit of my hot rod stuff to the new place...I'd like to have the fridge over there but I have to choose my battles and the flatheads stay. So if you want to drive to KC and load it up it's yours. That's what - four hours? Otherwise it goes in the moving sale.

Here's a pic of my Hotpoint. I keep it in the gay-roge full of beer (or just Gatorade, lately). The interior is almost flawless. One of these days I guess I'll paint it. [IMG]

Runs perfectly and keeps my stuff as cold as, uh, hell. Light even works still.

Had this LEC for about 12yrs now & it just keeps on going, another brand over here was Prestcold which was manufactured by Pressed Steel Fisher who's real game was making car panels for cars called Austin Morris.

Root, almost everyone at one time or another marketed a 'fridge. I used to have an International Harvester 'fridge of all things. Of course it was made by someone else but if you look around there are a lot of them still out there keepin' the beer cold.

Yeah, if you're ever watching Friends, look closely at the fridge in Monica's apartment - it's an International Harvester. My ex didn't understand why I got so excited watching that show with her one day.

    Really liked that Crosley fridge.

Curious why I haven't seen any Nash-Kelvinator fridges yet. Seemed the company was known for the fridges almost as well as for their cars.

Can't seem to find a full shot of the damn thing, but here's my Frigidaire in the garage. You know when they have those Spring cleaning days and people just throw stuff out? Snagged this, and it works perfectly.

Is this vintage enough? [IMG] I restored this about 7 years ago. Microwave in top, liquor cabinet in the bottom.

My wife's grandfather recently gave me his 1944 General Electric fridge he bought brand new. It was their first fridge ever. Before that they had an ice box. He worked for the FAA and so was considered a contributor to the war effort. He was given a coupon so he could by the fridge. Your average civilian couldn't even buy one. He is very proud of that fridge. He says he did have to spend $3.00 on it once to replace the rubber seals around the door....the damn thing still freezes ice.... Why can't they make them like that anymore? sorry no pic's

you walk into almost any bach (beach house) over here and they'll have an old fridge as the main unit or at the least a beer fridge - i had one till i sold the bach and built a new beach house - meant new fridge kitchen etc - wish i still had the fridge though
other than that SMEG do a modern version - same style but modern internals

10 years ago there was a place in Huntington Beach that used to restore and sell these early round-tops on the side. It was called Beach Appliance. I do not know if they are still in business or not.

Hey, what are decent unrestored but restorable round-tops or other vintage fridges worth?

Here is a link to a site that specializes in restorations and parts: www.antiqueappliances.com. They can make a new door seal. I would imagine that it would be pretty expensive. I found a place locally that would make one for $35.00. I just used some silicon caulk and repaired my old seal myself.

Funny thing is we redid the kitchen with new stuff ripped out the old and Maytag fridge didn't last 5 yrs. Got tired fixing it and found this 1942 Fridgidaire at Ricks Restorations as seen on TV. And fell in love with it. Funny thing is now we are throwing out all the new stuff and the wife has gone all retro in the kitchen.. She even found a vintage elec defroster thing on e-bay in the orginal box. It looks like an old Jiffy Pop popcorn bubble that goes in the freezer and plugs into 110volts and defrosts it pretty quick. Shes little noiser but I dig the humming noise she makes . The fridge not the wife that is.lol.Doug
