California License Plates DMV Clear But Was Told For Truck not Car Please Help

Went to the DMV to have my plates put on my 53 Ford Customline car, and was told clear but for a "truck sweetie". The number is 1B71861. What sequence do I need for a car? Thanks.

 

Yep, commercial plates only have one letter. Auto plates have three to four letters depending on the total number of placements available for the plate. I.E. six or seven digit plates.

 

Does not make a difference with yom plates in california! I was told I couldn`t register my 32 truck plates to my 32 coupe at a small town dmv.So I called the main office from the parking lot.No problem!!! I also have car plates on my 34 pickup!

 

That is only because of the age of the vehicle. I had 28 car plates I was going to put on a '28 truck, and the DMV person told me, "Well, your supposed to have commercial plates, but, due to the age and likely hood that you will not use this vehicle for actual truck use, we can make an exception."

So, past a certain vehicle age, it don't matter, but, '53 is still going to matter.

 

The only difference is the vehicle weight fees that are added to the registration. The vehicle needs to be weighted and give that figure to DMV. Putting commercial plates on a car shouldn't be a problem, taxis have commercial plates.

a passenger car sequence (6 numbers/letters total, note spacing) for 53 would go:

NL N NNN

N=Number
L=Letter

heard that some of the old plate numbers are being reused i had a set of 51 plates tried to use on my chevy and said that they are registered on a brand new diesal

 

Are yours "Auto" or "Truck" plates?

 

I've been told that a non-commercial truck CAN run car tags. I know this was so back in the day, because when I lived in Cali as a kid, my Dad's Chevy 3/4-ton truck was reg'd as a car, because it had a camper on it. I still have the plates off that truck from that time.

The commercial tags are supposed to be for trucks and open bed pickups only, and not for cars.

 

they are car plates. i am familiar with the difference in the truck and car deal.but the dmv guy said that they are starting to use the old numbers.when he told me that got me thinkin about paying good money for so called clear plates

 

I wondered what the DMV was going to do when they ran out of numbers.

I think July is when the "Black plates" can start to be registered.

 

every CA dmv interpets the law its own way.

one of the funnier things going on with the CA dmv right now is the kikker 5150 bobber bikes (glorified pit bikes). some CA dmv will make them street legal and some will not.

 

I've got '56 CA commercial plates on my '61 Comet. I don't pay any weight fees or anything like that. I called the DMV special plates division in Sacramento and was told they don't care whether it's passenger or commercial for YOM plates. Your local DMV office makes a photocopy of the plates, a form is filled out, and it's all sent to Sacramento for approval. If you do a search you might find that I posted the number a year or three ago. It's a toll number and sometimes it's tough to get through so you might try calling first thing in the morning.

your DMV clerk does not know the rules. I'm suprised they knew the difference between commercial and passenger plates. as long as they are clear it does not matter.

Is what they actually told you that the number on the plate that you have (i'm assuming a 1951) is actually registered to a presently? If that is the number on your 51 plate it would be correct for that but that number is now used for truck and if it is in use is not DMV clear.

 

Here is some information from a guy who specializes in CA plates.

Do you have plates for 1951 - 1955?


Most (not all) 1951 plates were 7 characters arranged as 6 numbers with a letter in the second position (ex: 1A23456).
The DMV started reusing this configuration on commercial plates in the last 30 years, so they have used up most of the numbers again.
This scarcity of DMV clear 1951 plates added to a high demand for years 1951 - 1955 makes them VERY EXPENSIVE, so I rarely have them.
That sequence for that year is usable for a car.

 

I'm not doubting you but what is "COM" lettered up and down, then L NNNNN

This is a 51 CA plate too.

Obviously the COM means commercial, so they used 2 types? Or are these for bigger trucks?

 

Well, some said COM, and some said WRK, and yet others said TRK. But, all to my knowledge were commercial plates.

COM= Commercial
WRK= Work
TRK= Truck

Not to hijack the post but I have a 1966 CA plate that is:
L NN NNN (taking into account the spaces.)
It begins with an "X" what was this used for?

 

L NN NNN would be commercial for a 63-69 black plate. passenger was LLL NNN

 

Not to be dense but what does commercial entail. Taxi cab, limo, pluming truck, bread van?

 

Pickup Truck/El Camino/Ranchero.

The Black '63-'69 CA plates are now eligible for the YOM program.
The same rules apply.
You must have 2 (two) plates,the exception is a Motorcycle or Commercial Truck,which require 1 (one) plate.
You can register them starting July 1.

 

Im almost positive that you have to go to the DMV for YOM plates..

 

i put 1951 C O M plates on a 1955 westfalia camper years ago..

 

I got them ok'd today, DMV is a trip!
