Edmurder, Most cars will fit in 22 ft but you will lose the back wall for storage Sam I've threatened to dig a hole in this dump for the last couple years I read you first post and found the difference in our shops (I think) You have this two foot rule, nothing sticks out over two feet! I also have a two foot rule, If I get within two feet of something free (or even damn cheap) I drag it home Here is day two, I use my parts washer to often to bury it, I have it right by the door for easy anytime access
everything in these two posts were free! engines, bins, everything except the gas cans (I just ran out of gas yesterday and had to buy another one)
[ QUOTE ] Sam, I'm thinking about building a 30' x 22' garage, as it's about the largest I can fit on my lot without ******* off zoning too bad. Would you have a problem fitting larger cars & trucks in your shop if it were 4' shorter? Thanks, Ed [/ QUOTE ] Yes, but I like to have enough room in front of the cars to work. See if you can't streatch it a couple extra feet. Sam.
This has not been fun but I'm on a mission Almost everything in the shop came with wheels and were free
I'm lovin this! You're doing a great job! Back to the 22 foot deep garage... I wish 38Chevy454 was around this week... he has a garage that is kinda shallow... maybe about 22 feet... and it is a ***** with his '68 GTO in there... ya can't work on the car with the garage closed. If you absolutely have to have it that shallow... you won't be able to hardly have anything in front of it if'n you're going to work on a longer car. A Model A, T or 30's car would be ok... maybe a 40's car... but 50's cars might be tough. Anyone have any measurements of their garages?? Sam.
I feel your pain. A few years ago I moved from 19000 square feet to a tiny 4000 squares. I think we tossed two 40 yard dumpsters full of car parts and had three or four ch***is towed away. I've got enough space for 20 foot tall, 3 and 2.5 foot deep pallet racks. I stack all those parts to the celing and I still run out of space. I've got to sell more if it just to have room to work. Sam, I'd really like to see the photo tour of your labrotory. The teacher in you just WANTS to share with us <grin>
i loved your indoor race track. that place had style, what does your new place look like? I'm going to build my dream shop. but looking for a place with less land.
Oh man, you guys are so fortunate! It would be so cool to have all those sweet parts and projects laying around, most of it indoors it seems... I have a driveway with enough room that I can almost open my doors all the way. Hell, the park rent-a-cops will yell at me if I wash my car... I think parts and projects is a bit of an obsession. I have around 300 model cars myself, more than i'll ever ever build... but I like having them. It's like being wealthy, having things you love all over the place. Some day, i'll reach you guys level... some day...
Mojo, I didn't always live in an indoor fun park. I did three cars in my gravel driveway in Austin. Then did two more in the underground parking garage of my apartment in central Houston. I had other people's cars parked two feet away on each side of mine. As far as the new place...I've got way to much **** (good stuff that sells for way-way too much on ebay. see the other post) and not enough clear work benches or open floor space. I had bodies stacked on their firewalls for a while. I'm finally getting to the point where I can at least SEE the floor again. At least I'm not like Bob Wilson. I heard that a story that he needed to use his sheet metal brake and spent a day moving stuff so he could get to it. When he finished clearing the way he realized that he had just opened up the space in front of his shear and that the brake was on the other side of the shop! He gave the world headquarters a good organization after that. I didn't recognize it the next time I was there.
you guys are lucky to have that much space! i've got a one car garage with barly enough room for my model a. let alone all the parts, engines, toolboxes, tools, ect. i dont even have room for a work bench
[ QUOTE ] Anyone have any measurements of their garages?? Sam. [/ QUOTE ] my first, that I lived with for ten years was 12' wide 20' long had a sloped roof 4' high in the back and 9' high in the front.. with a dirt floor. second one that I also had for ten years was 20' wide. 22' deep and had an 8' ceiling the one I bought a year ago now is 30' wide and 60' long. I gave 20' of the back to the Mrs. so I really only have 30' x 40', with a 13' ceiling. ....... my dilema at the moment is how to fit the overhead crane, it is 30'x 30' but it would interfere with the lift on one side and there is a conflict in the middle with the gas heater and stairs to the loft. without some serious rework it can only fit in one side and will have to shrunk to about 14'x 20' I wanted to be able to pick a body or motor or whatever and set it any where in the shop... Paul
Paul, Were you able to work on larger vehicles like a truck with the doors closed in either the 20 or 22 foot deep garages? Thanks, Ed
[ QUOTE ] Anyone have any measurements of their garages?? Sam. [/ QUOTE ] I believe the main room is about 32' by 75', the side is about 10'x75' and the back room is about 12'x32'... or there abouts... how bout an old view from the loft...
Ed, the first garage was not much more then a shed, I could only work on one end of the car at a time and with the doors open. the second was a small two car garage and with the bench and shelves at the end I had to do like Sam and open the doors to work on the car. I did have an upright compressor, drill press, and other stationary tools but most were on wheels. Paul
Thanks, Paul. One more question -- Was 20 feet wide enough to work on two cars? What I'm trying to establish here is the "envelope" that's required for each car. Thanks, Ed
Mojo, I don't know how old you are, But in this world you can have anything you want! granted some things take longer.but if you want it and focus on that one thing it will happen. I was lucky to have a drive way for years. I bought my first house in 1969 and it had a three car garage but no back yard or anyplace to hide projects. I wanted to add another two car garage in front. I've gone up and down for the last 35 years, but the first thing I look for in a residence, is shop and storage. Cars have always been my p***ion, You have to sacrifice something to get something. I have had good friends that would spend all their money on booze, drugs and women (nothing wrong with that) then tell me they wished they had a shop like mine. the problem is not money, it's dedication to what you want in life. if you need a better job, focus on that. I've seen on this board many who might have less talent, tools and cash. that have built some of the coolest **** on the planet. Then there is Sam
My garage is 24 x 24, and I have a "comfortable" amount of room all the way around my 52 Chevy, even with both car doors open. If I am gonna work on the front or the back with the garage door closed, I usually roll the car forward/backward a bit. I have a workbench on one side, and shelves on the other (hidden in the photo). My toolbox is in front of the car, but offset a little to make tool access a little more convenient. I would really complain more about my 8' ceiling than anything else size-wise.
I have a 16 x 22' garage. It was a real pain when I had my 66 GTO in there to try to work on it. Now that I have dramatically downsized to a T it is like working in a ballroom. Well, it was, til last month when i built a tag-a-long trailer for the T
mine is 15 X 20 pretty cramped when you get some shelves and benchs on each side with the doors closed there is only room to work on one end but with some imaginative thinking I got stuff stacked and stored where I can open both doors to the ole f1! 20 X 25 would be heaven
