Could anyone tell me if this looks like the correct T5 gearbox to use on a Flathead conversion, this is the only pic Ive got as its for sale on ?bay.......Thanks for reading Bri
Thanks Jeff the shifter looks in the rite position, if I go for it I will be fitting it in my 35 Ford Hauler.......Cheer`s Bri
The input shaft has 23 teeth is that the same as yours also has your got a mechanical speed drive, the guy who`s selling this is a tad slow on the info.........Thank you for your input....Bri
Here you have a good article on t-5 to flathead http://www.flatheadv8.org/t5-swap.htm Also check out this post http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171291
I did ask the guy about the tag & other questions, no reply, so Im going for a Chevy S10......Thanks for your time.......Regard`s Bri
Yeh Ive looked on the sites regarding this info & they recomend a 83/87 Chevy 4 cylinder van with S10 T5 GEARBOX & that year should have a mech speedo drive. Please correct me if Im wrong...........
Make sure it's not the '93 and later model that was used behind the 2.2L motor. They have a Ford mounting pattern. I can't tell from the photo what version it is. Bob
Bob I was told the gearbox in the pic is Ford mounting patern & electronic speedo drive, the stick shift is in the perfect position for a Flathead, I hope the 83/87 model Chevy is the same. If any of you guys know of one for sale I would appreciate any mail ......
In our literature we recommend the 85-92 trans. Normally the 85-88 has a manual speedo and some 89s and all 90-92s have an electronic sender. BorgWarner trans with detachable bellhousing. Flat Ernie is the man on these trans. We've had our adaptor kit on the market for over 15 years.
This one has got a manual speedo which is OK for me as I want to use the orig 35 Ford speedo or a Stewart if I can`t get a cable for the Ford..Thank you for your input.......Bri
Your message is sort of mushed together, but I read that as 13-52 145 which decodes to 85-86 S10 with either the 2.5L 4-cyl or the 2.8L 6-cyl and ratios as you say: 1st - 3.76 2nd - 2.18 3rd - 1.41 4th - 1.00 5th - 0.72 It should indeed have a mech speedo drive that can be easily adapted to most speedos. If it's in good shape, it's a good trans for your application. Buy a good shifter with adjustable stops - best protection for these ******s.
Thank`s mate, Could you give me a company name where I could purchase a shifter with adjustable stops. all great info, Id be well in the dark without it.......my best Regard`s Bri
Your best bet for the S10 is to get a cheap (~$50 on eBay) Mustang shifter and modify to fit the S10. To my knowledge, even the S10 Hurst units didn't all have the adjustable stops (early ones definitely didn't) and I've heard rumour that Hurst has quit making them...but not confirmed. I'd use the Mustang shifters - the two rear bolts work, you redrill two front bolts to suit, and trim the excess (S10 is square, Mustang is rectangular) - the Mustang shifters all also take bolt-on shift handles, so you can make/adapt to suit. EDIT: Your pic at the top looks as if it has an aftermarket shifter. You'll need to look under the rubber boot to see if it has adjustable stops on it...
Thank you, thats about it on this thread for me. I reckon ive got everthing, Thanks Ernie & everyone who put there input in I hope it helps all Rodder`s its been good.......Regard`s Bri
I wouldn't try to use that one because of the cast base. Try to find one with a thick, machined (billit) aluminum base. Like this one: eBay# 270350564894 Looked through eBay - seems most of the "cheap" ones have gone up to about $70-80 - used to be $45-60 (but I haven't looked at them in a long time). Here's one: 220383356215 Here's a late-model stock one - it has adjustable stops on it (didn't know they were doing that) - eBay # 330322072422 - could give you ideas about how to make stops for yours. A ring of tubing with some nuts welded on and bolts to adjust....
