I'm looking for the perfect antique white auto paint. Anyone have any good suggestions?

  2. I don't know the code, but Ford's Wimbledon White from 1967 might appeal to you. See if your local paint store can mix a sample

Always thought the white paint on the old 50's 60's Mercury outboards was a nice shade. As was their black also.

When the pre-paint prep is done well, Ford's Wimbledon White is gorgeous. I've also seen some metalflake added to it, and then it goes "BLING"........

Another vote for wimbledon white. Great for firewalls. Almost everyone one of my cars has had this color on the firewall. Gary

I agree with some of the above replies, Whimbleton White like you'd see on a 63 Galaxie with a 427 and dog dish caps.

Ford paint codes show that wimbldon white goes from 1946 to 1993 from what I'm seeing

I agree the Ford Whimbendon white is great. Not a super bright white, just right for contrast with another color. I had a 65 galaxie that color and the top on my 64 is freshly painted that color as well. Ford had it in both 64 and 65 for sure and your local paint shop should be able to look up the PPG number for it....if not, give me a PMl and I will try to find my old can for the number

  17. Does that tell ya anything;)? It must be a very popular color to have stayed on the books that long

  18. Hard to beat wimbledon white, used it on my firewall and scallops and very satisfied.

They used different names for the same color-1950s Fords wore "Colonial White"

So, how many shades of white are out there? Ford used several shades of white during the '50s-'60s - the numbers I list here are Ford's M-#'s as opposed to trim tag codes or other manufacturers' formula numbers. For instance, Snowshoe White (M-354) was a brighter white used on '55 Fords, after which came Colonial White, a.k.a. Glacier White (M-524) - again a brighter white color, it was used on '56-'57 Fords, then brought back for '59 Fords. Winterset White (M-495) was used '56 Lincoln, '56-57 Lincoln interiors and '58 Fords. Then for '60-'63, a true off-white was used, Corinthian White, a.k.a. Polar White, Polaris White, Sultana White (M-1238), which has a yellowish cast to it and is very noticeable when compared against the next iteration starting in 1964, Wimbledon White (M-1619) - this color was used for the rest of the '60s and into the '70s (?) I'm partial to Corinthian White because that's the color for my '63 T-bird - it's definitely richer-looking against a whiter-colored car and has a wonderful glow to it. See the attached pic of my car next to another '63 which used another white color(OK, very poor pic and the off-white aspects are lost in the direct sunlight).

And, without going O/T the last white I'll ID is the Pace Car White used for the '64-1/2 Mustang, but I didn't have Ford's M-# in my list (after all, who on this list cares about Mustangs :D).

Our 50 Burb is Wimbledon White. Lots of pics in my album of a big ride outside may help you decide if it's your colour.

One I've always been partial to is "Old English White" as used on the MGA and MGB's back in the 60's.

  24. My '56 is Colonial white (according to the code) and it is an off white. I remember Colonial white on Chevy's back in the '50s and it was white as brand new snow .. so in my opinion Colonial white is different dependin' on what it's on. I painted my '55 Chevy Colonial white, back in the day (like a '57), and it was white as a Kelvinator ...

If you are looking more for an off-white, or a creamy white, try Chrysler Cool Vanilla. It is not bright white, but has a slightly vanilla look to it, hence the name. It is available on Chryslers and Dodges from '03 - present.

I have the charts for 1955 but they don't give the quan***ies for the mixing of the colour. I wanted to paint my 55 Snowshoe White but the colour was only used for one year and i could not a formula for it. I went for Wimbledon White which though listed for 1965 is almost identical to 56's Colonial White.
I have seen US paint suppliers listing Snowshoe White for sale but I would have to get it shipped to Oz. Seemed too hard for me.
    Regards
