I just scored this 1965 Studebaker Daytona coupe. It's all original with a GM 283, Powerglide and AC. It came with a ton of NOS parts- fenders, bumpers, windshield, front valance, grill, trim, lenses, a complete new black interior along with another hood and trunklid. Got a good deal on it. So now the decision is restore it back to stock or build a g***er with a big block Mopar stroker that I have waiting for a home. The original motor is seized. So what do you think?
Howbout a mean lil sleeper of a Stude? Stock lookin but when the fartcan boys get all rowdy you put them far far behind you?
very cool. The 1965-1966 Studebakers all came from the factory with Chevrolet engines, so I'd be torn about building one of those. An SBC would, technically, be right, but it'd also be awesome to drop a Studebaker V-8 into it and build it as South Bend should've. dan
Please don't make a "g***er" out of it, put a built street sbc in it and make a sleeper out of it. It will drive nice and still leave black marks a block long. LOL. ..or sell it to me!
Mine came with the 170 inch six. It runs better with the SBC. 283 would have been about 100 inches short so I went with the 383 version. I can only say I like it and Beemer guys need to get spanked once in a while. A Lark is a great tool for the job. Throwing in a picture from 40 years ago for a "G***er" look Lark. Actually it was an altered. 354 Chrysler works too.
If you have all of those NOS parts, I would use them to restore it, lower it about 2 inches on whitewalls, get reliable 300 HP smallblock in there and then drive it everywhere. That would make such a cool daily driver.
The '65 and '66 Daytonas were the best-looking Studebaker coupe built, IMO. You could not go wrong with either a SBC (I'd go a 327 with dual quads!) or the 289 Stude with the R4 supercharger! And a '65 Stude is NOT O/T, not by a long shot!
IMHO, that needs to look bone stock with whitewalls, steelies, full wheelcovers and single stage paint outside. Inside, at least a mutha thumper built 400" SBC and 700R4, but keeping the 283" rocker covers and orange paint everywhere over the aluminum heads and intake. "It's just a stock Stude." A silent-but deadly! thnx, jack vines
Supercharged Stude 289 is the R2 designation. Contact the Racing Studebaker forum here - http://www.racingstudebakers.com/stl-web/bulletin/bb/index.php
Yea it's Canadian built. I haven't checked the rear yet. Cleaned it up this weekend. The only rust is too small pin holes in the driver side floorboard. The hard part is I love Studes but I'm not really a Chevy guy. The picture is the motor in my International. It's a Studebaker 259 with dual two barrels and an R1 cam. I'm leaning towards the sleeper look with either a Stude or Mopar powerplant.
