air cleaner on carter carb?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lowgobuick56, Apr 13, 2009.

  1. so i am having a little trouble finding an air cleaner for my carter four barrel carb. it is on a 322 buick nail head. every one i have tried is too big, (as far as the opening where it meets the carb). the flange on the carb is about 4 inches. i have the original oil bath housing, but i would like to go to a filter. does anyone know of anything that fits? i was thinking of cutting off the bottom flange of the oil bath housing and welding it to a newer housing. but i hate to cut it up if i dont have to. any info would help greatly. thanks

I turned a couple of adaptors on my lathe out of a hard nylon (Delroid?) to adapt the newer style air cleaners to my older carbs. I wound up not using those carbs or the adaptors, so I should still have them around. I'll take a look and see if I can find them and take a pic of them for you.

were you thinking about a chrome aftermarket air cleaner?? I would think they would make adapters??? maybe not.

I wouldn't cut up the original. try to find a later model air cleaner at the junk yard and cut that up.

  5. Don't cut up that old oil bath, somebody wants it. I've noticed that some folks modify them for a disposable filter.

No dont cut yours up you may want to put it back someday!!

My 62 Olds Cutl*** has an air cleaner with that size base for its 4bbl. So I would say any aircleaner for 61-63 Buick Special/Skylark; Olds F85/Cutl***; Pontiac Tempest/Lemans that has a 215V8 w/4bbl will work. Im sure there are other similar age and size GM cars w/4bbls that also would work.

I have found that most ebayers will answer questions if you ask nicely.

If you have some time, let me ask a few guys on the Buick forum and get back to this thread...

No need for any drastic mod, just find a paper filter that will fit inside it.

I can't find an adapter for using a newer breather on my '50 eight carter carb. It's only about what..... 2 1/2 inches around? Nobody seems to have an adapter for me either.

We've got one of those where I work. I just re-did the whole Mr Gasket wall today and noticed it (along with the slightly more common GM 2v to typical 4v adapter).

Let me know if you can't find it elsewhere and I can get it for you.

I hope you understand, I never give out anyones direct address without their express permission, but use this ebay link for finding sellers. Look up . olga895 . and click on contact seller. When I needed a gas tank, he was the only game in the US that I could find. He has a yard full of F85 parts cars (and full sized Olds); directly north of you in Mt.

Dave travels a lot so it may be awhile.

Havent heard back from my good source in Tx yet but its early.....

Those adapters also sound like a good idea; a lot quicker too.

  14. If it has a Carter AFB on it, Edelbrock repops a later Chevy version of the carb and an air filter should be pretty easy.
