I found this old chevy 1ton dumped closed to the house and just had to look. A sticker in the fenderwell says 350cu but what kind of motor is this?
That is the fabled chevy v8 engine. Many men have devoted their entire lives to the chance of finding one of those ultra rare motors. Rumor has it that you are more likely to see a unicorn with a mermaid riding it, than finding one of these.
Looks like an Olds to me too.. definitely not a Chevy SBC compare to this olds 350.. Especially look at the water transfer pipe from the thermostat housing to the water pump. Also note the valve cover shape and number/location of bolts. Oil fill tube as well.
Olds, and scrap too i'd guess. Diesels don't generally have carbs but chances are it's the original Olds 350 diesel converted to gas.
Look at the fuel gauge...does it say diesel fuel only? Looks like one of those infamous GM diesel engines, based on the Olds 350 V-8, or whatever Olds engine the General used to source these gas conversion monstrosities.
The truck had a 350 diesel, and when it cratered an Olds was swapped in. The POS diesel was based on the Olds block so the gasser bolts right in.
Oldsmobile gas engine. From what I understand you cannot just throw a manifold and carb on one of the diesel engines. Olds used the same block design for the 350-455 engines so it is difficult to tell at a glance what it is. The casting number is on the block just behind the water pump, an ID number is stamed on the oil fill tube, and the heads will have a letter on the front of the drivers side head or rear of the pass side. If it has a manual transmission, the bellhousing would be worth having for a buick/caddy/poncho/olds powered car.
definitely a olds gas engine. looks like a letter C on the corner of the head which would mean its a big block. I always thought the diesel 350s only came in the half tons for mileage and couldnt even be towed with due to having zero balls
just found this on 442.com: C '67 - '69 425 80 394548 A/C '68 H/O's. Toro's and 442's got big. 455 valves. Rumored to flow the best of all BB heads. Can still be found.
