Some more stuff for you Y block folks. I previously did a tech on putting electronic in a standard old Y block and someone ask about doing a vintage old mallory. Bought the Mallory off the bay and machined the electronic parts to fit and rebuilt the entire unit ( removing years of old crud). Just for grins i laid out the Y block units here for comparison. The early unit is somewhat like the flathead and has vacuum only. The mid unit is a later unit and actually is a very good distributor. Other than looks its as good as anyone ever made!! The mechanical advance curve is adjustable by bending tabs inside and can be adjusted without taking the unit apart. I have done many of these and they run very well. The third one is the nallory dual point converted to electronic and has my vote for the look as well as function. Stay tuned for more ......
Ok lets make it electronic. I use the chrysler parts from NAPA from a 78 dodge and they work great, as well as a GM HEI control module ( remote mounted in this case). Poor pic i know A total tear down and polish etc with reluctor machined for press fit to old mallory distributor cam and pick up phased for correct rotor phasing etc. Every thing fits very well. Then the HEI control is placed in a cover ( matches the coil cover from the diskster). Unit is test ran on machine for a few minutes. I use a low resistance ignition coil and hook up is pretty straight forward. Plug in to the distributor, hook two wires to the Accel coil , ground the module case with black wire apply power to the coil positive and bang youre done !!! Nice conversion!!!!!!! As always very cool and innovative stuff from Bubba. For those that are not able to machine stuff, PerTronix makes a bolt in Ignitor to fit the Mallory dist.
