not exactly what i was looking for, but its somewhat of a help. its wired i litterally JUST did a search on wiki and nothing came up. i must have bad searching skills.
Car nut specs has the listing by year Plymouth and dodge use the P 9 through P 28/9 as model codes and engine codes. The engine number usually has all the info you need. Its above the generator on the block just below the head. If your 41 engine is stock it should be either a P9 or P10 followed by 6 or 7 other digits. D is dodge and T is truck, these are likely 23 inch engines same as yours (if stock) S desoto and C chrysler engines and some I industrial engines are 25 inches long and will fit but you need to make mods to accomodate the extra length. All engines made in Canada are 25 inch. if stock your is a 201 cubic inch P12 ti P23 are 217.8, Dodge from 41 on were 230 plymouth changes to 230 in 54. The difference between a 218 and the 230 are crank and rods, you can make a 218 a 230 by swapping them. Crankshaft flanges on the dodge engines are thicker and have an 8 hole set up to deal with the extra weight of the fluid drive. The casting dates are ok information but are not necessarily related to the cars manufacture date. Some engines will have no number as they were sold to aftermarket rebuilders unumbered and the rebuilders were supposed to stamp them with their own but some just riveted a tag to the block. Lotsa good Mopar flathead info at P15 D24. Several members on that board from CT. and Ma. If your motor is a 201 and you get something later, swapping your 201 head over will give you a pretty good compression increase. What are you looking at??
........thanks for info guys. Have a '54 Savoy I'm tryin' to figure out. DeluxeRat, if you find that missing codes link please post. plym 46, what does the 23"/25" engine length refer to? Block length at head attachment point? thnx 'gain, Ed
Head lenght. Your 54 should be a P 24 pr P25 it should have a 230. There is a square pipe plug in the head directly over #6 cylinder. If you remove the plug and root around a bit with a pice of stiff wire to knock the carbon out of the hole, the wire will ride up and down atop the piston. This will allow you to measure the stroke of the engine by measuring thr travel of the wire. Just make sure it 7 or 8 inches long so you can work with it and it doesn't fall in. 4 3/8 = 218, 4 5/8 = 230 on a 23 inch engine. Pull the plugs to make the hand tur over easier. I believe the switch was made in mid 53 so all 54's should have the 230 assuming it the engine thaat came with the car. Which transmission does it have?? 3 speed or powerflite 2 speed auto??
......believe it's a 230 as well. According to most everything I've read you are correct on the size switch as far as '54s. Car was purchased from what I was told was the family who had it since new. Tranny is 3-speed manual.
