This is just a thought I had, however, I think it would work. I have NOT talked to Ryan about it. I figured if he did not think it will work he will take the threa down. I would be willing to donate money to this every year, What about you. Who: We would have applicants from ages 18-25 (JUST A SUGGESTION ON AGE) submit to Ryan where they would like to go, why they want to go there, what their plans are after said specialized college or trade school. We the people of the Hamb would vote on who get the scholarship or scholarships for that semester. Where: I know there are a handful of schools and workshops everywhere all over the US at one time or another. I know Schools like UTI and Wyotech are not cheap like $13k-34K depending on what you pick. I also know that people like the great Gene Winfield offer cl***es as well. I am even thinking maybe a team of shops on the west and east coast we could get people a paid apprenticeship for a certain amount of time. Shops like: Circle City Hot Rods, ***, So-Cal, So What Speed Shop etc etc. When: I would say these would be for a year if it was the paid apprentice and the length of the school required if it was like UTI or Wyotech. It would be cool to also to send a few people a year to some workshops here and there. Why: I do not believe college is for everyone. However, even though I am college educated I do believe that people should be required to learn some type of trade. There are a lot of talented people on this board along with a lot of people that are young and have the want and p***ion to learn but maybe not the funds. Here is a chance for us to help, all pending Ryans approval I think we should start some type HAMB Scholarship program How: There are tens of thousands of members on here and everyone has taken something from the HAMB or learned something on here. What I propose is if everyone would just give even one dollar (some will give more) to this great cause to help someone learn a trade that has to do something with the automotive hot rod or kustom field.
I think it is a great idea, but I think it should only be after they exhaust their GI bill. It is just my opinion.
I would have to vote for it to go toward a degree or equivalent. Another thought would be that they prove in some way that they graduate/get the degree/p***ing grades before getting the dough. (kind of a after the fact deal but make sure it is not a waste.)
oh for sure.. thats why I was saying a submission of why, where etc etc etc... or maybe we can pick where and they come up with why... maybe start small at local shops for paid appreticeships then we can get reports of progress and what not...again just an idea to be ironed out!
Bigdaddy check out McPherson.edu 4-year degree in automotive restoration! I know a lot of my fellow students here are into hot rods and a fair number are hambers. Just another ins***ution name to keep in mind. I'm in college and I'd give a couple bucks to a cause like this. I can tell you first hand how tough it is to get scholarship money and students loans just keep going up...
Our car club here already does something similar.. we pick a student from the local high school from the Auto Collision Technology cl*** that is enrolled in the Auto Collision program at UACCM. They have to be a p***ing student, already accepted into the program. We pay for the list of the must have tools and the toolbox and we get the list from the college. If the student finishes the program, they get to keep the tools and toolbox. If they leave before finishing the tools stay for the next student we sponsor. Last year, we gave the scholarship to 2 girls from the HS program. They are doing well in the college program and we are getting ready to pick a student for this year. I think this is a great thing for car clubs to do and it puts a little back into our hobby in the end...
Setting up a 501C3 would be nice. That would be a non-profit that can handle the scholarships. I was just fortunate enough to be part of our county 4-H Scholarship Committee. It was VERY difficult to judge the applicants and I will say that you MUST have definite criteria. I'd look at UTI or WyoTech or wherever and talk to them about setting up a HAMB Scholarship. If they can facilitate it, you'd be much better off than having to make our own 'department.'
I'd be into that and would donate to it. You might could set up a system for apprentice workers instead of ins***utions if you could find really good builders who would take on apprentices. Just use the money to pay them a salary while apprenticing? Just a thought. Might be to much room for cheating on that though....
Problem is...this is a good idea but look at the Andy Memorial. No thread in the history of the HAMB has gotten more attention and still it's only raised $3000 the last I heard. That's to CURE CANCER and save human lives and that's all the response we've gotten. To send someone else to build hot rods like we'd all love to do, I'm betting is going to be even harder to get money for. Times are tough, money is tight. Love the idea but the best bet is to get the school to offer the scholarship and use the 50,000 members here as advertising. Just my thought. Hope I'm wrong.
I see 3k is a good thing better than $3 bucks... that is not to mention the shirts and plaques are not done yet correct... as soon as people see them I bet they will think twice... maybe you are right tough maybe Ryan can flex his HAMB MUSCLE tm. towards a UTI or WYOTECH??
Why the fixation with Wyotech and UTI? Trade schools are good but I'll do you one better! www.mcpherson.edu Check it out!!! Its worth your time. Look under academics column and click on the auto restoration link
