Muncie HELP PLEASE!!!

ok i got my transmission in my truck, Its a M20 its been rebuilt, but when its pushed in neutral its clunking. What would make a Transmission do that? Could that be endplay in the cluster or????

ya the linkage is adjusted properly, i tried taking the rods off just to make sure, its definately clunking from the transmission. in each gear with the clutch in.

Sure throw me out there!

Check clutch adjustment, just cause it seems released does not mean it is FULLY released.

Are you starting the engine and hearing the clunking, while the clutch is in? It almost sounds like it is partially in another gear. Its been a long time since I've had a Muncey apart, is it possible that a shift fork is installed incorrectly?

Are you completely, totally sure it's the transmission and not the driveshaft? Is there sufficient movement in the slip yoke? Is exhaust or a safety loop really close to the Ujoints or shaft at any point? You might be suprised how bent a driveshaft can be without noticing, even when driving.

As fordcragar said it might be stuck partially in a gear causing the gear train to clunk. Two reasons for it to be partially in a gear when it apears to be in neutral:
1) Shift fork not in the groove of one of the slider (internal clutch) sleeve, hard to do and put the cover on but it could have been forced.
2)If a shifter rod is not adjusted correctly, too far in one particular gear and not enough into the opposite gear, the sychro will wedge up further on the gear making it difficult to pull it out of that gear which will cause a clunk.

You said it is a rebuilt trans, who did it?, any idea what sychros bronze or br***? (the bronze seem to stick in gear more when new).

well actually i rebuilt it, thats why i asked about endplay. I ended up with a big washer almost like a oil slinger, the manuals or diagrams didnt mention it, i was thinking its supposed to go against the cluster gear to take up end play. When i has putting on the tailshaft and had it sitting on another case on end(input shaft down) and when i turned the input the mainshaft was hopping a bit on the cluster, i layed it down like it would in the car and it was fine. Forks are in nicely, Driveshaft is brand new, i know its balsy rebuilding a transmission but im a do it yourself guy and i got a few more to do so Hey! ill take a picture of that washer. Be easy on me. hahaha.

there did seem like a bit of endplay in the mainshaft and the cluster. i torqued that input shaft nut as hard as i could. but im thinking i need to shim the cluster.

As I recall you should have a thrust washer on each end of the C/S and that sure looks like one ! LOL

If it sounds like someone knocking on a door it is probably a clearence issue with the cluster gear. Let us know what you find.

If it is ***embled correctly and even with some extra end play there should be no hopping, being on end should not affect gear mesh that significantly. Something is not right there.

What is in the pic is the oil slinger, it goes between the main drive gear (input shaft gear) and the front main bearing, it helps control and distribute lubrication. If it is not there it needs to be put there.

If there was a bicycle sprocket looking gear riveted to the front of the cluster gear it needs to be removed and the rivets too. It is a gear train mesh silencer and the rivets can come loose and clean house on your ****** something fierce. Also, remove the glued in magnet in the bottom of the case, seems like a good idea until the glue gives away and the magnet turns your Muncie into s****, I have seen the gruesome pics.

If you have excessive end play in the cluster gear, which should have a thrust washer with a hex shaped center and a key way on each end, you may have a stretched main case (pretty much most Muncie cases nowadays are stretched out, some pretty bad). If the main shaft has excessive play sometimes a .010"-.030" shim from pinion gear the correct ID size can be placed between the main input gear head and the oil slinger to take out some end play, it should have about .010" end play most old cases are too worn/stretched to get that.

Go to Autogears website here http://www.autogear.net/pdfs/munciecat.pdf and print the Muncie service manual pics to make sure things are where they are supposed to be.

thank you so much! thats exactly what i needed to hear! autogear list is perfect, well i guess i need to rip it apart and do it again. wow the hamb is such a great place! that oil slinger should take up some slack, ill check endplay on the cluster while im in there too. Thanks again! -andrew
