I saw this today while reading the paper, I figured that someone had posted it by the time that I came home from work, but I could not find it. It is a pretty good article in the NY Times/Science Times about the North American Eagle team trying for 800mph. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/21/science/21speed.html?_r=2&ref=science Chris
There was a Discovery Channel piece on this vehicle and dedicated group of volunteer speed demons last year. It's probably on you tube if someone would like to search it out and post it.
They had a show about them building that around a year ago. They were having trouble getting the motor in it, and they only had one guy who knew anything about the mechanics of the old f-104`s. I would love to see it run!! that`s always been my favorite jet. I remember them flying around the antelope valley when i was a kid.
I heard something on here a while ago about it, but hadn't heard anything else for a while. Good luck and godspeed.
I ran across them at a car show promoting the race car a couple of years ago. I hope they accomplish what they set out to do and I sure would like to be there when they make the run.
Geez, I think Mr.Shadle is the guy I traded emails with about 5 years back when I started building the 31 roadster. Last I heard he was looking for a 400 cid Olds engine (same block as the 425 and 455) for his dry lakes roadster. I guess he stepped up his sights a touch....
Ed runs a street roadster at SpeedWeek and did run Bud Jones' old lakester, but it is now in need of updateing. SCTA dosen't allow thrust driven racers at thier meets.
Wow, amazing stuff. Most of us get excited at going over 100 MPH. Wonder what will happen to Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America that was bought by the billionaire that was killed in a plane crash. He and Craig believed that the Spirit had never run as fast as it was possible of going.
No great step forward is done by timid men. These are some bold and audacious dudes. I wish them the best.
Balls of Steel..thats what they have for gonads....hahah maybe they should call the car that..Go-nads
Wonderful !!! Just when you thought the good old days were gone! I'm reminded of EJ Potter's book. He had a jet engine lashed to a flat bed trailer out by the barn; trailer chained to a bulldozer while he laid under the thing working the throttle with vise-grips . Carry On.
sodbuster ... non-wheel driven (thrust) LSR vehicles are probably a bit O/T for the H.A.M.B. ... but I dig them anyway ... thanks for posting! Boo! ... Hiss! ... Damn Brits! Agreed! Here's part of the "World's Fastest Wheels" episode: <EMBED src=http://www.youtube.com/v/IBUXo0EKXy8&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999 width=640 height=505 type=application/x-shockwave-flash allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></EMBED>
Rich ... what ever happened to Bud Jones? ... Bud was a friend of my late father ... they both had Chrysler 300s and a love of B'ville ... in Sept. '84 they went to Speed Week together ... and a few years later, Bud debuted his lakester with the flatmotor ... (somewhere) I've got lot's of pics!
Rich ... thanks for the update on Bud ... sad news ... but kinda what I expected ... Bud Jones and his homebuilt Flathead powered Fuel Lakester @ the 40th Annual Bonneville Nationals - Aug '88
