47 Dodge sedan update

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by loc8tor, Feb 12, 2009.

  1. Well as seen before in a previous thread, I traded some wheels for this 47 Dodge....figured since she had a rebuilt flat6 Id just make a nice cruiser out of it....I started collecting parts.....

2 of them are brand new cokers, and the other 2 are new aswell, but have been setting for a few years(I hope the bleachwhite brightens up the ww)

next I picked up 4 '59 Lancer hubcaps
    [IMG]

there not perfect, but hey, its a driver, and it will give her some Charecter, LOL.

I then scored a set of NOS seat covers on ePay...there not a factory print but they will fit nicely into my plans...

then I got a visor(still waiting on it to be shipped)

..and will treat it to the same Cali Suede Black treatment.

And I recently rattle canned the body black suede so it didnt look like Jacobs coat(it was tan, primer, blue, and black).

theres still alittle over spray on the trim and gl***, some from me, some from the PO..Got a gl*** guy coming to give me an estimate next week, he said he'd remove the center post and V-**** the windshield together, cut it bigger then lay it in with the new car style trim, and match the back window since it has no chrome anyway, and I could even go tinted if I wanted. As Im trying to stick to a period theme, Im not sure on the New style trim or the tint----What Do You Guys Think????

As soon as I can get a chance to pull the wheels off, plans are to paint them red to blend with the interior, then mount the wide whites and lancer caps.

I also picked up a pair of dummy spots(sorry no pic) and am looking at lake pipes, and I have 3 small chrome air cleaners, and Im lookin for 2 carbs to match the one I have to mount as dummies....more plans to include dropping the back about 2" and a set of skirts, then maybe some scallops and pinstripping. Oh and I located the missing chrome, and I plan to remove the rf fender spear.
Id also in the future, like to french the headlights(maybe change them to 39 Plymouths), change the taillights, remove the turnsignal pods beside the grille, and maybe incorporate them with the headlights, and throw on a matched pair of 49 Plymouth ribbed bumpers.
Way in the future Id like to chop the top and clean up the tail so it slopes more like a fastback...
You guys have any suggestions on the plans or comments or thoughts, drop em and let me know, as the weather warms up more will be done and more pics updated.

Just found a set of wheel in the garage that were dual bolt pattern, so I stuck them on to get the other wheels stripped and painted....not a bad looking combo, but NOT what Im after....

just a little photoshoppin. there are some pretty fun and drastic shape changes. these plymouths i dig the fastbacks but i like the slant of the door post of the coupe and in a chop the back side windows look too big so i am hoping to lengthen the doors and slant the post. other than that i dig the ideas... here is a quick rendition of what i see would be cool...

  5. Heres a few more pics with the visor and spots installed.....hopefully tommorrow I can get some with the www on red steelies....seat frames and covers scored on ePay are at a friends upholstery shop....(my neighbor has his house for sale, and had an open house Sunday, so I told him Id stick my number in the window....make it look like it was for sale, and that he didnt live next to a salvage yard operator, LOL)

  6. I finally got the broken bolts drilled out and mounted the hood, the p***enger side fell into place, the drivers side still needs some adjusting to get it to close, found a set of gl*** skirts, hope to have them in the next few days, still searchin for a cheep set of 72" or 80" lake pipes, might just have to buckle down and actualy buy something new for the ol girl, LOL. Heading back to the bone yard Saturday and grabbing the rear seat, door arm rests and a bunch of interior screws, and maybe pull that carb for a future 3x1 set up I want to build.....also added the WWW and steelies.....whatcha think?

Still setting a little to high for me and the taller and skinnier tires exagerate it....plans were to just drop the rear 2", but may go more, and maybe try and drop the front a little too...

OH, and the dang Lancer caps wont fit, not sure if its the rim or the 5 fingers that hold the stock caps in the center.....so keep a watch in the parts ads for 4 '59 Lancer hubcaps!......anyone got an idea on what little dog dishes would be perfect for the ol girl....shes sportin the stockers now, and Id like to change that......

Getting better for sure, really needs bumpers and rocker trim now.

Are the wheels on there 15"? I don't think those are stock, should have had 16" originally, although whatever they are they do look nice. Wheelkid was making little single bar flippers that would bolt onto the baby moon style hubcaps like those, would look nice.

A V-****ed windshield won't work with the center mount on you sun visor.

  8. yep L-78 15"ers....thats the wheels that came on it when I got it, yea tossed out the v**** idea when I got the visor....looking at 49 plymouth bumpers saturday when I get the seat at the bone yard.....maybe grab some 3" blocks and drop the back ths weekend too...oh and I got a set of skirts on ePay

  9. liking it with the dog dishes on it, but what do I know

    Yeah, could use a drop!

What about shannon cones and tri ribbed trim rings? I can't understand why those chrome center strips in the windshield go bad but the chrome around the window is nice. I keep looking for a good one for my dodge but can't seem to find one. Are you planning on shaving the door handles or what about a frenched antenna? What about using cordoba headlights and frenching them in instead of the 39 plymouth headlights. Cars looking good and yeah it needs dropped some.

Squablow, my 40 dodge had 15's when I bought it, I thought that was strange.

  13. Spanish Fly, I didnt cut the roof, I think with the visor it wouldnt look right....

plmczy, shannon cones? Im clueless , lol, pics? yea, tri-rib rings would be cool, I thought Id go with those thin stainless ones....I figured the handles flowed into the chrome strip, so Id leave'em for now, yea been kicking around the frenched antenna and maybe the liscense plate......as for frenching the headlights that was my original thought, and my mopar buddy clued me in on the Cordoba rings....Not sure if I can drop the front and still maintain some sort of ride, so maybe just drop the rear alot, ya know taildragger style...thought about stretching the bumper back and adding a continental kit, but ???????

That's a good lookin' car...love that MoPower body style. '49 Plymouth bumpers look really cool on these cars and fit the contours well. How about a pair of full flipper 'caps on the front with skirts out back...would, I think, look super on a tail dragger. Split the exhaust and run some duals with smittys. Those flat 6s sure sound sweet with that combo. I really like your choice of material and your ideas...keep us posted.

  18. Found a pair of 49 Plymouth ribbed bumpers today, picked'em up, brought them home, went to mount them and they hit the fenders, they are too narrrow
    ......*&%$#@*!!!!!! (insert explitive here)
anyone got any ideas????? I thought about cutting them and inserting a licsense plate frame in the center both front and rear, or, cutting the ends off and using the ends that were in the car bolted to the outside, smooth ends ribbed centers, maybe with the bumperguards breaking it up, or, maybe I should just get a set of 46-48 Dodge stockers.....

  19. While in at the bone yard I found the stainless center windshield divider from an unknown car...with a little t******* it fit my dodge, so I grabbed the silicone and glued it iver my existing center piece...

also added some mismatched trim rings and a mismatched DeSoto caps, but hey, you can only look at 1 side at a time right! I threw in a pic with the 49 ribbed bumper hanging on the 47 mount...as you can see its just not wide enough....

Just FYI on those 59 Dodge wheel covers that didn't fit - 59 Dodges have 14 inch wheels with a special outer lip; the wheel cover snaps into the lip and covers the wheel from edge to edge instead of leaving the usual half inch or so of the wheel showing.

So the covers won't work on a normal 14 inch wheel, and aren't designed to fit a 15 inch wheel, either.

loc8tor, what about removing that front bumper filler and moving the ribbed bumper closer to the body, would that fit up a little better? Usually when someone moves a bumper in the have to shorten it to fit it up. Maybe that would work in your favor? later shawn

  25. 413 thanks for the tip, I sold the covers to another HAMBer, when the wheels were painted they look so nice with the dog dish and trim rings I decided to sell the covers.

plmcrzy, I think Ill try removing the filler this weekend and slide the bumper back...it wont work on the back though, no filler there and it hits the fenders.....so Im thinking extending it back and making a new filler with a well in it for a spare tire, kinda like a continental kit.....

Oh and my front seat is ready, plan to pick it up this weekend....if any of you guys/gals are close to Hagerstown MD, I know a great place to get interior work done!

Nice sedan!:D As to the wheels my 47 has 16s and my 48 moredoor had 15's the change was made in mid 1947 production... everything on the sister ship plymouth bodywise is narrower, shorter, etc. Nothing interchanges sheetmetal wise.
You have no idea how awesome the shape your eggcrate grille is, It is worth some stocker bucks if you decide to modify! Here's my bucket.

    Attached Files:

  29. Got the floors scheduled for repair, with a new ****** cover, trunk will be fixed at same time, as well as gas cap hole plugged!
