I know, I know....WTF is he asking for? He must be an idito or a Ford nut. I have the opportunity ot pick up a really really low mileage 2008 Dodge hemi engine for a bag of peanuts and a smile. It comes complete with ****** (auto) and electronic **** all over it. Now, if were to use it, I would not want all that electronic ****. I would want a carb or two or eight and a stick shift. Has anyone used one of these engines without all the electronic stuff and how did she respond?

you could put some Oldsmobile valve covers on it.... What it going in? If it's cheap, I would be on it in a split second. You could always trade or sell it. But that plastic engine cover **** has to go.
Modern technologies are great but there not for every one. When I use any late model engine I buy the intake,carb,distributor,fuel pump and usually change out the cam for performance. I call it the best of two worlds. When one of the modern engines **** out on the hiway your at the mercy of strangers where ever you may be and hope to hell you can get repairs. Most of the time you would need a 18 wheeler full of diagnostic equipment to locate the problem on these electronic marvels. The simple system with old stuff is far more better for me and cheaper to get rolling again no matter where you may be in the event of a problem. My opinion and that's how I see it.

The engine/trans may be cheap but finding and buying the parts to convert it to carburetors/distributor, non electronic trans etc. is going to cost a fortune. Save your $$ and get a real hemi.
You have already mentioned that secretly, You want ( No, NEED) a pontiac engine. Problem solved. Beauty is a by product of SPEED.
Before you p*** on the 5.7, take a look at the latest Mopar Performance catalogue. IIRC they show some changeover stuff like 4-bbl manifolds, not too sure about electronic stuff though... ... if you perfer an EarlyHemi, start asking, no doubt someone has one, or knows of one available. Just know in advance that the cost of rebuilding is 'up-there'. .
Sorry about that!! I agree with RAY With. I've got a late model 350 chevy motor but with tri-power and points distributor, I like the roller cam motor but I take some **** about the center bolt valve covers, I think the Hemi may be over the top even for me.
Well Well. Intersting comments. First it is a real hemi weather you want to believe it or not. The combustion chamber is almost identical to the 1960s Jag sixes which were also hemis. (I was a Jag mech in my mispent youth) Just because it has a quench ring around the outer end does not make it "not a hemi". Just an attempt at keeping the need for a huge dome on the piston out of the mix. Not a particularily bad idea. And like i already mentioned, not new. I know! Some of you dont want to hear that, tuff. Get used to it. (It aint a wedge, it aint a poly, it aint a pentroof, its a hemi) And just in case you think i dont know what an old school hemi is I have done a 331 in the last year and ran for many years a 426 H at Cayuga in the 70s. I am using a 5.7 in my Heep project. I had built the 60s 70s engines for ever and a day and still run my ol dragster with its 1962 slant six but i think it doesnt hurt to use the new stuff as well. I would use it and I would even use the electronics. I read a thread early today calling EFI non trad but i suspect they meant modern. EFI was first put on a production car by Chrysler and Bendix in 1958, No, Hans, it was not first used on the VW , that was 10 years later. The first systems were double throttle bodies (like 2 two barrels) They had trouble with powerline and EMI interference and so where removed from all cars but one or two and subs***ued with a perf carb set up. A few years later when the EMI problems were solved VW and Cadilac introduced an updated version of the same system. I have worked on both of them in my tune shop back in the day. So a hemi with EFI is totally traditional in idea form. Maybe you just dont like new stuff and that is your choice but they are already pulling 600 hp from versions of these motors and to date no one even has a solid cam and such available. When they do and the 7000RPM barrier can be p***ed (hydraulics are pretty well limited to 7000RPM and below. ) power will go through the roof. Airflow on mildly ported 5.7 heads can be 340 CFM and on 6.1s around 370 cfm (See patriot Engines, Extreme perfomance , indy cyl head for example) That is huge airflow for a streetable engine with a hydraulic cam. The Hp they are getting reflects the flow. Efi is not as senitive to huge airflow as carb systems are. Most of that goes to carb characteristics . EFI doesnt care. Unlike the carb it doesnt depend on airspeed for fuel delivery. Your own preferences are you own business but i think this is a great motor and is being overlooked for no good reason. Also I have seen in tests it can be run with 1 plug per cylinder with no power loss. That gives the possiblity of blocking the two outer and the two inner plugs out in the valve cover and polishing out the evidence after welding. That leave a valve cover looking very much like an Ardun headed flatty. Could that be a bad thing? By all means build what you want but I wouldnt throw this idea out just yet. Im not.

I say buy it for a bag of peanuts & a smile, sell it to someone who actually wants it. Use that money to buy a real Hemi. Then you can have your peanuts and eat em too.

YES ! IT DO SAY THAT !!! But i sure LOOKS like a NISSAN engine to me ! But just for a second i was under the ***umption that this board was a TRADITIONAL forumn that was aimed at Guys who like to work on and Build useing OLD parts. I see that i have been mistaken and in Reality we have crossed over to being a STREET ROD forumn.

There is a Difference, Maybe not the forumn to ask but i know for a fact there are MANY guys on this board who Know about Muscle cars. I have had several Late 60s Early 70s Muscle cars myself and would own a few of them again. I can also say that IF i did own them again i would build them to fit a certain Time Frame and would never consider a NEW Hemi in a '69 Dart let alone have one hanging out in the wind of a fenderless Hot Rod. But whatever, Guys can do anything they Please... Im just Kinda tired of seeing guys with Brand New **** on So-Called TRADITIONAL cars and then doing a 180 and give someone a hard time about there **** not being TRADITIONAL. What's wrong with 331's?????? Actually, that's fine. I agree. Let's keep 354's and 392's really desirable so the prices of 331's stay low so I can afford to buy more 331's. Same with the extended bell 331's. They're junk too. Everyone can send their extended bell junk to my place. I'll gladly p*** my address on and make sure it gets disposed of properly. Man, unless someone is giving you that Hemi for like $19.95 or something, I would put my money else where, unless you like the look and feel of new stuff. I'm partial though. Do what you like. Ultimately you're the one that has to drive it.
I'm haveing a hard time remembering a 68 V Dub with an efi. Perhaps you could enlighten me. Actually I don't recall ever even reading about an EFI '58 MOPAR either. But that doesn't mean that it didn't exist in some backroom some where.
I thought the same thing, But you all know i know Absolutley Nuthin Chrysler F.I. in '58 was MECHANICAL as were Pontiac, Chevrolet & about everyone else as far as i know well into the '60s. But the '68 VW bug had NO EFI, Although the Type III ( Fastback, Squareback, Notchback) had BOSCH EFI .. First year for VW and the ****tiest induction EVER !

I think that Boyd’ s sons and one of those pimp my ride guys Put a new hemi in a 68 Cuda it was horrendous .at Barett Jackson last year I hope my kids don’t do that to me when i am gone
