more 40 chev. p/u mounts

Here is what we have come up with so far to mount the sbc in our 40 chev. p/u. The general consensus on stovebolt.com is that it wouldnt work without going to an independant front end. I counldnt see why not so were giving it a shot. With rams horns exhaust it looks like it should clear the steering box no problem, everything else really just kinda fell into place. The engine mounts are from a design from a set of plans we bought from SRI, the frame brackets are our own design, the mount cushions are off the shelf Napa items. So far through all the mockups looks like it is gonna work but maybe I am missing something? The transmission mount was so simple to fab using the stock components its hardly worth mentioning but I will take some pics of it when its back up on the hoist if anyone is interested. Comments, concerns, criticisms please. Thanks-

 

only thing I see is, on the part that bolts to the motor, I would gusset the plate the mount bolt goes through to the plate between it and the engine plate. I don't understand why they would say you couldn't do that with a strait axle?

 

Yeah I may put another gusset on the bracket that bolts to the frame, I think the biggest concern was the exhaust hitting the steering box but it looks to me like we are going to have pleny of room???

 

Looks good to me, I think the reason they say that is that because the wedge shape of the motor mounts would spread the frame, I have heard that for years but have never seen it happen.

An independent cross member would be further back and prevent the so called spreading of the rails.

 

those mounts look great. The guys over at stove boly must be confused. I had a 400 sbc in my stock framed 37 chevy truck with all the original every thing including ALL the cross members.

 

I too made my own mount kind of the same style.I have looked at some of the available crossmebers you can bolt or weld in that take care of the wedge issue,runs from frame to frame.When i get to putting the engine back in im thinking of making or purchasing one.They are around $60.00.Burl

 

i would luv to see some pics as im throwing in a 350/350 into my chevy 40 pu.....how did the trans crossmember work? Are you putting the motor in the stockish location or moving it back a bit? any info or pics of this build would help alot...do you have a build thread?

 

by the way are you boxing your frame at all?
