We all know about bomber seats. However, I have a customer who told me a story about how back in the sixties... they used to use the bottom half of a shopping cart frame to make a bucket seat. What they would do, was take the bottom half of one and use it for a frame, take plywood, foam, vinyl, and a staple gun to cover it. Is this an Ohio thing, or did other people do this as well?
Nope, it's true. There is an old article on how to do it in a Rodding & Restyling (i think) from the early sixties, I have it lying around somewhere. But realize the shopping carts weren't the giant monsters they are today.
I have the issue with the article on cutting the carts down for seats, but please don't show the picture. The next thing you know, grocery stores everywhere will be missing seats, and every half-*** looking rat trap will have them as seats.
I'll find the mag tonite and post the pics in the Social Group tomorrow. The scanner makes too much noise and will wake everybody up!
This is true, but one thing everybody (the RR's) have to realize is that the carts were asthetically pleasing back then (not to mention already chromed) and a great deal went in to making everything look NICE! Then again, they don't care about asthetics or safety...it's all, "Just do it to get it on the road, bro.....(insert Pabst belch)......!" No offence to any PBR addicts.
Hey now, I have a daily dose of PBR! But all it takes it on rat trap builder to hack up a walmart cart and it'll be out with the bomber seats in with the cart seats.
True...I'll hold off till the heat dies down......a lot! As a side note, these carts get left out in front of the house all the time. Yes I live in one of THOSE neighborhoods. Now that spring is here, they're back at it. Johnson Turf Builder won't keep em off the yard so now I have a solid beginning to a killer welding cart!
Haha, My welding cart was created from a Walmart job that someone left in the parking lot of my warehouse, about 10 miles from the closest walmart. The cage is now bolted to a wooden roll cart on casters and holds my small s**** metal. The calculator on the handle is now mounted near my workbench for accurate calculations. Can't beat free!
Raised in Ohio as a teen and remember the shopping cart seat deal. Have also used the rear wheels off two carts to make a mobile A-frame.
Someone posted the scanned article a few years ago. It was a cool build but shopping carts don't look anything like that now, I have never seen one anyway. I have a big shopping cart I use on tear downs for all the big ****. It's an ugly ***ed ghetto thing and as soon as I empty it out I am cutting it up so I don't have to look at it anymore.
That's what I was thinking as soon as I saw this. I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen it already though. Screw it, bomber seats are cool so let all the rats make shopping cart seats so we can keep the bomber seats in just the cool cars. You guys have calculators on your shopping cart handles?! That's pretty cool.
You guys have calculators on your shopping cart handles?! That's pretty cool.[/QUOTE] Down here, we have extra fingers on our carts so you can do your calculations.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228460&highlight=shopping+cart+seats The article says you can pick up a broken cart at your local shopping cart repair facility for next to nothing. Select a State to view Shopping Cart & Basket Repair Listings in your area: http://yellowpages.superpages.com/l...E=S&L=&search=Find+It&search.x=39&search.y=15 Not to hijack the thread, but the wording in the ad on the last page of the shopping cart article sounds funny and contrived now days. "It's a fact, man. Car crafters...don't just dream about that way out custom... Get goin' man. Order today!" I get the same chuckle when someone writes, "That's sick!" today. (When did sick become good? I guess shortly after, "Wicked!" That's OK, "it's all good.") I think I'm going to start using, "The bee's knees." I like that one.
East Coast thing I think, I read about it in one of the Little Page hot roding books back when it was new. If I can find the feature I'll post it. Guess I shouldf have read the repliesbefore posting. Check this out, do a Google search on Type 57 Bugatti and click on the images. There should be a few interior shots, the factory seats have tubing frames that look very much like the shopping cart based frames. ThaT Rodding & Restyling feature was the first thing I thought of when I saw my first T-57 interior years ago.
those carts are too cool! Youll never see an article again suggesting you steal a shopping cart and cut it up! hahaha
wow. thats pretty creative. putting the "grocery" back in "grocery getter". when i first saw the ***le i thought it had to do with those little plastic flappy things my wife puts up so her purse doesnt fall out of that place where babies sit. i thought to myself "well that oughta look like ****". i was pleasantly surprised. just goes to show that generation really didnt let anything go to waste.
