OK, I am showing my age here. It seems that I remember years ago that we would bolt the 53-54 Chev backing plates and drums onto the 37 -39 Chev spindles to get five lug 15 inch wheels. Seems the top bolts on the spindle bolted up but we had to add a spacer to the bottom ones. Little fuzzy here as that was a long time ago. Anyway, I am faced with this proposition with a 38 Chev coupe that I am working on at the present time. Can someone tell me if this is correct and if not what I need to be looking for?
I used 56 pickup spindles and backing plates and 54 p***enger car drums. Had to make special bushings cause the pickup spindles used a bigger king pin.
1951-54 Chevy would work, '51 the first year for the Bendix brakes. When you pull them, if possible save the bolts and spacers and make note where they go.
I've got a '39 chevy that someone put the whole frontend from a '51 -'54 under, crossmember and all, looks like a pretty simple install.
curious to know about this as well, I have a '40 chevy p/u that I may try to put my '53 brakes under it...
Yes……..It’s been years that I did that `53-`54 hub on `38 spindles. If I remember right you needed to drill the lower holes in the backing and take the spacers from the lower 53-54 and use them in the top and make longer spacers for the bottom bolts. You need the inside race from the `38 which will match up with the bearing from the `53 hub. That’s the way I remember it.
