I've searched but could not find anything to help me out so I figured I'd post a thread. I've recently pulled apart my `90 700r4 (verified by ID) for my first transmission rebuild which so far has gone smoothly until I noticed I did not have the large, copper flashed, check ball that my shift improver kit identifies as being larger than the other check balls. I really cannot explain where the ball goes so I made a very crude image to try to help explain it. The transmission I have looked like it was rebuilt by someone who knew at least a little about them because the holes were already drilled into the separator plate and the 1-2 accumulator piston had two nuts around the accumulator rod as spacers to provide a stronger shift. My questions are: 1. What is this check ball used for? 2. How much larger is it from the others? 3. Can you use a smaller one in its place as the previous builder did? 4. The linkage has a roll pin that must be used if this checkball is used. Can this push pin hold a smaller check ball in place? 5. Also, my valve body has a yellow stamp on it with a circle with 87 in the center. Does this mean its a 90 case with an 87 valve body? Can this work with the changes made troughout the years or did I buy someones garbage? Thanks!
You don't have a manual or anything that will tell you what the check ball is for? If not I would get one. I can't help you cuz I have not torn into mine yet but at least this will keep you at the top.
as mentioned , that check ball is the fail safe check ball if the TV cable breaks or comes un hooked. it is not needed. diameter measures about .315 other check balls should measure .250 do not use a .250 in that position
