As the title states, my distributer cap popped off while I was cruzing down the road yesterday. Its a 55 Ford Customline with a 272 Y-block. Any ideas would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mike

Is it possible that the rotor could be popping off the post and bumping into the cap? I dont know I thought I heard of this happining...

I think your cap and rotor should be from the same company. Get quality components with brass contacts in cap, stay away from aluminum contacts. My 2 cents. Good luck!

Do you hear a pop or bang when it happens? Check your oil for gas in it. Gas vapors working their way up into the inside of the cap ,get enough and a spark from the points BANG off comes the cap. With PCV systems hardly ever happens nowdays, but years ago not unheard off.

If that is the orignal dist. the shaft could be wore so bad that crank case pressure travels through it and builds up in the cap? Ive seen oil come up the shaft and it'll come out under the coil pickup, so pressure sure could do it also. There will be alot of quick fixes but if it is worn the best fix will be a new dist.
