Man going to have to chage my gears i have 4.11's in av8 with a a 40 ford rear 700 16 tires and 39 box. Man at 60 mph 28-3000 shes screaming. What are you running in your av8? I think i'll jump to 3.54s i want drive it on the freeway but not with those gears . When i redo my motor i'm gong to put 42-48 side shifter gears in my tranny. Billy

If you can find the 3.54 ring & pinion, that's the way to go. Changing the transmission gears as you indicated won't accomplish anything- 1:1 is 1:1.That's what 3rd gear is in any 3 speed (and most 4 speeds for that matter).

I went from dreading the freeway with 4.11s until I installed 3.54s. I would never run that low a gear again on a street car without overdrive.

I think you have just pointed out the reason the T5 is so popular behind flathead V8s.

I ran a 3.25:1 rear gear in my 40 Std. Coupe and never blew a transmission again.

    with 600x16's i was at 4000 at 80 mph with the 4.11's and 1:!.
    With the t-5 and .76, I think, OD it's now 3000 at 80.

And I;m where I need to get on the Interstate for a bit before I can get to decent two laners. So I gotta be able to keep up with the traffic. If you don't keep up they'll run you over. The OD makes it possible. And I normally don't use 1st gear in the T-5, starting out in second is fine with the 4.11's.

If you put a riser block under the shifter to shorten the throw, you can make a long handle and put a floor boot on it to cover the rubber trans boot. It will look right

What about the 3:78's are they any better on the highway??? I own a real nice one and want to use it.

  9. Everything i grew up driving had steep gears. Ford bob truck 688, 64 chev 1/2 pk 283 three speed 410. you just need to drive slower or get the tallest tires you can find. :D Oldwolf

Obviously, a 3.78 ain't as friendly to your engine as a 3.54. Again, that's why so many guys are going to the 5 speed where 5th is O.D. Too bad ther's no convenirnt way to run O.D. and keep the torque tube. (Yeah, I know all about Columbias and Lincoln Zephyr O.D.s but I said "convenient").

I have 4.11's in my ranchero...
the only thing its good for is burnouts...
    it fuckin SUCKS.
good thing the smallblock holds up at high rrrrr's until I get new gears...

  12. HELLMET.....3000 rpm @ 60mph will reduce to 2760 rpm using 3.78 gears. If you switch to 3.54 gears your rpm @ 60 mph will drop to 2583.

You can keep your torque tube and run an overdrive by:

    -using Crazydaddyo's S10 4x4 t5 to torque tube adapter

    or

-using a Mitchell Overdrive that splits the torque tube

Had a 4:56 in my Corvette years ago.Ran great BUT gas was .35 cents a Gallon then!!!! Love a 3:54 now.

  15. I am suppose to have 3:78's but my GPS says I'm goin' 10 miles an hour slower than my speedo says. I ran the numbers with my tire circumference and it sure looks like 4:10 to me. Ya get a used car and you have no idea what's in it. I've got an overdrive in the build .. phooey on that crap ...

I had 3.40 ratio in the 55 with a 4 speed ... switched over to 3.70 for more dig and it is terrible on the highway ... steady 3 Grand just to run 65 mph ... going back to the 3.40's ... Joe

  23. If you don't want to take the cover or 3rd member (depending on the tranny) off, then jack the car up and count rotations of the driveshaft to the tires. Just over 4 rotations of the tire and it's 4.11. Just under and it's 3.73s

I miss my 4:10 gears. I had 4:10s in my '54 Ford and run 215 x 15 tires run down the road at 4100 at 70 mph. drove the hell out of it road trips to as far away as Texas, got about 12 miles to the gallon with a 350 chevy and auto, had been running that set up about 16 years never no problems, but to much jerking it around tore the pinion bearings out, put in a 3:54 now no fun to drive, getting ready to buy a new set of 4:10s and going back to having fun.

I have 4:11 in my "off topic" car w/ 28 in tall tires and I need to go to 3:73 or 3:55 I'm runnin a blown 454. 4;11's are too much but it's still better than the 4:88 I had in there 10 years ago

Just picked up 3:54 gears. Can't wait to put them in and get a little more range out of the truck.
