    rant on:

PEOPLE *****ing about the effects of not painting with all their PPE is starting to get to me. To me it is the same as some one *****ing about getting something in their eye without wearing safety gl***es / or a face shield. OR, someone in the shop with flip flops on and hurting their feet, so on... It is just ridiculous that someone gets sympathy for painting yet gets their balls busted for the other, ITS PLAIN STUPIDITY to paint with out the CORRECT PPE:

Fresh air supply , or at minimum a great charcoal mask with prefilters, and replaceing the filters within the correct amount of ussage(aprox 8 hours exposed to the air) and Store them in a sealed container.

    Paint suit, WITH HOOD!

gloves, (perferably tape the seam between the end of the suit and the cuff of the glove)

Some sort of eye protection! be it google, safety gl***es, or a hood type FAS

then when you are done painting TAKE A SHOWER, and change your clothes some residual chemicals will be on you and you clothes.

    its your life your resoncibilty

like welding with a helmet on, steal toed shoes, and safety gl***es. There isnt any difference.

    /rant off....

You must be an industrial salesman. I figure anyone stupid enough to do hazardous work w/out some measure of protection deserves what they get. Remember, common sense isn't very common. **** em. Can't save em all.

i painted for uncle sam for years after getting out of the military.painted epoxy, poly, laquer, zinc chromate...then one day in 1981,they came around and said..you guys wear these mask and put some coveralls on...then 5 years later they came around and gave us fresh air hoods..it was too late by then...my lungs, liver ,kidneys and skin was all shot...so today, there is no excuse not to wear the ppe..us lab rats paved the way for you young guys to paint safe.

A freind of mine has the shakes and a few other issues as well. He's in his early 40s, been painting since his teens. Its a shame.

  7. Wow- I don't know if I'm just off-base with this or what, but I've been all around the body shop industry, and I've never heard of all of this.
I still talk to the guys I knew who were spraying with lousy protection n the 80's/90's- and nothing.

There was always alot of talk about "isocyanatal sensitization" from paint reps and such, but that's just an immediate reaction and not a "condition". I did all kinds of crazy stuff in the years right after high school, like spraying the inside of water tankers with a pressure pot of DP40 while wearing a 3m disposable mask- only because I was 18 and needed the money and didn't know any better.

    Makes me wonder.

I agree, wear the ppe. I have a friend that works in a body shop and i always catch him spraying without it and i'm always busting his balls for it. He just shrugs it off. He'll get whats coming to him i guess.

    Great post!

You are right there are some really stupid people out there. Had a f and paint at a vocational school. Had a student who turned a sand blaster to his face and pulled the trigger. The student said "he just wanted to see what the sand looked like riend who taught bodycoming out." Where is peoples brains.

I feel the same way. I'm not exactly a safety nazi, but when it comes to intentionally poisoning myself, I'd rather not. But it never fails, everytime one of these threads come up, someone will clam to have painted for 30 years wearing little or no protection with no ill effects. Then you see someone on TV shooting clear with a charcoal mask, in a dirty T shirt and flip flops. I swear, I'm not making that up, I saw Pete Santini doing just that on "Overhaulin'" reruns just last week. I'd sure like to know how he's lived this long and how he keeps trash out of his paint jobs.

I think too many of us have been way too careless and way too lucky when it comes to painting cars with these paints. and I am right at the top of the list on this one as far as not being careful enough.

I've painted a few cars. About 20 so far. Never wore eye protection or gloves. My belief is everything in moderation. I smoke .peoplle get strange diseases ,ppe are good and minimize risks. Proper masks ,ventilation thats the key . I wouldn't blame doing paint or bodywork on a disease or sickness unless your not wearing an approoved respirator. I've been there .5 Years ago I was paralized from the neck down with a disease known as Gbs . I recovered 100% But to blame it on painting is rediculous.Your body can only handle so much.Smoking,Repetative painting or bodywork, breathing of fumes. That is what is bad.The normal do it yourselfer shouldn't get liver or blood damage which is posted on back of every paint can. My 2 cents

This is a great topic - I'm an ****agy guy and like to compare things to other real life experiences. About 30 years ago when I was 17, my best friend pulled me aside and told me all about his herpes break out. He was a tough guy, football jock and he was almost in tears describing the pain. I went from there to the drug store and purchased three boxes of Trojan raincoats - one for my jacket, one in the glovebox and one in the nightstand. NEVER did Mr. happy go anywhere w/o wearing one until I was married. Now days, all the warnings are out there - what is your life and current way of living worth???? All it takes is one time of your ego saying that you'll be alright just this one time and it could be different for ever. I also have a friend that has painted ONE car, he now has ONE eye - he won't paint the second car, I wonder why??????? It seems pretty simple with all of the warnings and evidence out there - you have two choices:
    1)Where the protection
    2)Be a dumb ***

Like my father who only has 15% lung capacity left.
Course, he started painting in the 50s....

  18. My whole family has sanded fibergl***, bottom paint ,gel coat ,every kind of paint you can think of ,even asbestos years ago when it was still being sold.Sprayed and brushed paint and gelcoat with no eye protection, respirator, etc,.The list goes on and on.However,I am not foolish,I do wear eye protection when working metal. The warning on paint cans ,etc, are to protect the company in case some nut does something stupid. Have you Read the label on a tube of caulking lately? It will say not to eat it. If someone is that stupid let them gag on the caulk. My 2 cents worth.

Yeah I guess that's what we were. Back in the 70's I used to paint cab over Freightliners and Kenworth's using Dupont's Imron paint and wearing nothing more than jeans, long sleeve shirts, a hat, goggles and a dust mask. The **** was so toxic you could only paint for 10 minutes without getting fresh air. Fortunately I suffered none of the bad ills that many of my co-workers later suffered. I was one of the lucky ones.

Still suiting up like you're going into a biohazard room doesn't seem real appealing either, but if you got to, you got to.:(:D<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Exactly!!! Wear the stuff. My old neighbor smoked two packs of Lucky Strikes for 50+ years, died in a car accident looking for his lighter. Never developed a breathing issue.. I guess smoking isn't hazardous because he did it for soooo long...

The biggest problem is the one we're already seeing: more and more restrictions on what we can use and how we can use it.

If people don't starte exercising more caution, the paintshop will go the way of the chromer...just sayin'.

There's no excuse for not protecting yourself. While I may not agree with some of the precautions, I have to think there is a reason for them.

I only take my mask off after I've finished painting and I'm ready to light a smoke.

    Safety first.

  26. I have to agree with wearing of ppe for paint & metal work, but I also wear it when sanding body filler & primer. never can be too safe + I have an 8 month old daughter that I want to be here for. L8r
