An unlettered red 39 CHEVY 2 door or C or D/MP at the U.S.Nationals in 68 I guess. I was at the starting line watching as he wound it to 9 or 10 grand and dumped the clutch. Poor 'ol small block couldn't take it. The entire lower end of the engine exploded and crank, rods, oil, shapnel, and even a couple pistons littered the starting line. Car rolled about 15 feet. The most devestating non=nitro engine failure I've ever witnessed. I remember it like it was in slow motion.
I have a second scrap book of 40 pages.Gasers M/Ps and street roadsters. Pics and stories from Drag News and such. Also membership list and points standings from UDRA circuit. Is there any enterest in me posting all of this?

We love this kind of stuff... But, please scan each photo individually at about 600 dpi, so we can "really" enjoy them..
This thread is great. All the races I attended pics were the last thing on my mind. I saw a good many of these cars run. Please keep the pics coming. Thank you all.
I was trying to get my '56 Chevy Del-ray 2-door sedan, into M/P class. It had a new over the counter 1962 327 FI block and FI heads, Carter WCFB 4-barrel, 3-speed, and 4.56 rear. In 1964, I rolled my '56 Chevy street racing before I ever made it into sanctioned competition to get a ET. I suspect it was getting around 13 flat with closed exhaust. In 1962, I tried to race my '56 Chevy at Temple Academy drag strip and the officials put me in D/Gas class becaue I did not have any front shocks! Needless to say, I did not race in Gas and went home madder than hell. I was going to install some 90/10 front shocks and go back to Temple Drag Strip but wrecked the car before I could do it. The only injuries was that my friend who was riding with me when I rolled the car, had little dots all over his fore head from the perforated headliner. That was one of my favorite cars too. It was solid lemon yellow with a factory black all leather interior. I should have know better to race without shocks because my associate tried the same thing a month earlier with his brand new 1962 Chevrolet Impala 409/409 when he attempted race in S/S at Temple Academy Drag Strip. He was also put in C/Gas and also went home madder than hell. Later he raced in S/S at the Abilene Drag Strip and got away with no shocks and the Abilene drag strip was NHRA sanctioned. (My cousin was the manager of the Abilene drag strip.) Just for fun, I raced my 1961 Chevrolet Impala 348 w/Turboglide transmission and got a screaming 17 sec. ET. When I saw Carroll Caudle racing at Amarillo, he had a Rochester 2-barrel carb on his Chevy...was I seeing things?
Bob thanks for the posts. I remember these and especially the Aurich/Monte Camaro. Does anyone have a picture of the red ,white and blue 67 Camaro of Phillips/Grasso out of Pennsylvania anywhere????
Thanks so much !! I spent a great deal of time with it and actually miss that car more than some people I have met over the years.......thanks Bob
