After having been laid off twice in under 2 years, moving 13 times in 10 years and just generally being a loser I'm almost as proud as I am surprised to announce this 29th Birthday present to myself...I signed the purchase agreement Thursday and we close June 30th...and you wouldn't believe the price I got it for...pics coming soon...

So...I'm confused...you bought a house? You bought a house with a garage? You bought a house with a garage with a car in it? You bought a house with a garage with a car in it and the garage used to be a speed shop? I'd like to be excited, but some of your pictures must lose something in the translation - like an old vise on a bench with a reasonably modern plastic Folgers coffee container.

Irrespective of all the above - I'm happy that things are turning around for you. There's nothing worse than being mired is misery that seems more like quicksand. Best of luck on whatever it is that you're very excited about.

All the shop pics are from a previous house that I had been renting...the yellow house is what I will be taking ownership of in the end of June...the lot is 70x280, house is 820 sq ft, garage is going to be coming down and a 30x40 shop going up in the backyard either this summer or next spring...

Doc, I usually ***ociate numbers to engine sizes right away, and I hadn't even noticed that yet...hahaha...it might just rank as the most expensive 409 ever, so to speak...

No, I won't be moving to Fargo as planned...I wound up landing a job at one of the nicest machine shops I've ever seen, and the deal on the house was icing on the cake to settle down here...I'm not exactly back on my feet yet, but things are looking better for sure...

I put the closing date stipulation in to give myself time to get my credit score higher and save up some dough for closing costs and such...wanted to try to get that interest rate down into the 4's instead of 5.25%...I already found a lawn mower from a guy at work and people to help me move, now I'm just waiting patiently...

Nice piece of property you got there. But you are not the sum of your houses and cars. You're only a loser if you decide you want to be a loser. If I were you, I would decide something different. But that's just me.

Way to go! The sooner you can get into the real estate game, the better. It's the best investment there is.

happy 29th birthday !! i purchased my first (and current) home when i was 29 . my suggestion to you is , if you can swing it make extra payments on the principal . it chops down the mortgage pretty quick . i was able to pay off my 30 yr. loan in 12 years by paying an extra 100-200 a month on the principal. i now have no monthly mortgage payment which is AWESOME. the only mistake i made was telling my girlfriend my loan was paid off , now she finds all kinds of expenses i need to take care of.

Looking good. With a lot that size try to picture a layout for the new shop/garage and consider keeping the old one for a storage shed. If you stay there for a few years you will need all the space for the next projects and parts. Speaking from experience.

The garage is a pile of **** with new siding and a new door, so I'll be replacing it with a larger 3 sided car port using the siding and reusing the door at the back end of the shop leading into the fenced in 26x26 gravel "project parking lot"...I've got almost every square inch of this property planned out already, my mind works fast at designing things...

Congrats! going rate is 5.25%. I'm in the middle of refinancing mine right now. Beware of zoning, too.

The city maximum is 1200 sq ft for garages, otherwise it'd be bigger...but I think I'm allowed 2 of them at 1200 sq ft each...hahaha...not bad, eh?
