my truck has been getting harder and harder to start-long crank, untill it finally died on saturday, put on a napa pump i had on hand ,drove about 30 miles -truck died again-no fuel -wtf??? bad new pump?? or should i suspect the fuel pump push rod???
lines, rust cloging pickup tube. blow back through the line then try it, if it goes than clean the tank. Sometimes the lines will get a pin hole in them and they will run for a while then **** air and stop.
Your fuel pump rod can ware out! check the ends, do you have another rod? Maybe its time for an electric pump? Speedway has a 6V pump, just make sure you keep your feul pressure around 2psi or your old stromberg or ford/holley will leak! If you go this route you need to block the feul pump rod hole in the block, if you don't you won't have much oil pressure!!
i do have an inline fuel filter, replaced on saturday with the fuel pump i will check the line to the tank ,didnt think of that thanks i dont have the money right now to switch to electric but it on the list!
See if it runs pulling gas from a can, rather than the tank. If it does, the problem is in the fuel line or the tank, and not the pump.
That's what I was gonna say. It would be real rare for you to have 2 bad pumps back to back. I always carried a spare push rod in my shoebox because everyone always said they wear out easily... in 8 years I went thru 2 fuel pumps and never had to replace the rod. I DID however have to get my gas tank cleaned out (rust and sediment) and replace my fuel lines and filters as needed over the years. If the pump pulls gas from the can, you can move on to other areas. You'll get it worked out... hc
oh... also, make sure the gl*** bowl is on tight and the gasket is not worn. Don't wanna pull air. hc
Might be trash floating around in the tank that periodically blocks the pickup. I had that problem in my '40.
Clogging can be tricky... there can be trash in the line moving back and forth letting in fuel here and there at any given moment. How clean is the fuel in the bowl of the carb? How clean is the fuel in the fuel pump gl*** bowl? Is there any discoloration or sediment floating around in there? Try to pull from a can as suggested above... if it works witout problem, check the lines. And hey, it COULD actually be the push rod... hc
what did your old filter look like? was it full of dirt or pretty clean? try and stay with the mechanical pump and away from electrical pumps, no need for them really on a flathead. I would get some fuel in a can and run a fuel line from the pump to the can to see if it works and go from there.
found out the tank was cleaned and sealed about 6 years ago, suspect that maybe the ethonal in the fuel may be attacking the sealer in the tank? Fuel tank sealer removal ?? (Technical)
Gawd! Don't use ethanol. Ethanol loves water. Ethanol is more active chemically than gasoline and it may cause problems with sealer. You won't know until you pull the tank, take out the sender and look inside. Regards, Alan PS on a flathead, the easy test is to pull the pump, turn the engine until the rod is at the very top, then put the pump in and on the rod, check to see where the bolt holes are, connect the lines and move the pump down until the holes line up, then move it up and back down several times, and it it moves fuel at normal pressure, everything is ok and you either have a clogged line or bad vapor lock (hot engine compartment, hot running engine) That can be tested by using a hand towel saturated with water laid on the pump and lines.
What kind of needle & seat are you running? The new "cartridge" type have been known to block off fuel, car dies, car will start back up - low power too. Put the steel needle/br*** seat back in if you've got the others....
On needles...the rubber tipped ones do hang shut, too. The ability to **** is the most important test, harder for the pump than the push side. Ford called for it to pull 10 on the vac gauge and to take a while to bleed down.
ok, pulled the line off the fuel pump and ran a line to a gas can and she fired up and ran, pulled the line off from the tank to the fuel pump and cut it open,no evidence of hose deterioration,so i guess i will drain the tank and pull it down, the tank was cleaned and sealed about 6 years ago so maybe i got dirty gas???
I'd suspect the carb first, but a quick check for the fuel pump is to just disconnect the line to the carb and crank the engine to see if it's pumping gas. the pump rod is not usually the culprit if the pump is not working (although it certainly could be). You might want to look at the base of breather/pump stand to make sure it's not warped (pretty common), which gives the appearance of a pump rod that is worn. If the pump checks out, I'd check the carb for a bad needle and seat or a stuck float (or other **** floating around). If you have any rust or other contaminents in the tank/lines leading to the pump it will almost certainly follow that there will be some of the same in the float bowl. Rich
here is the game plan, drain the tank and remove the sender and check for debris in the tank,i am also gonna run a steel line from the tank to the pump (found a rubber line from tank to pump) i am hoping to remove any debris from the tank thrrough the sender opening (with air operated vac***)
Do you have any rubber connecting lines? I've seen the inter lining come loose and block the flow of fuel. Ethanol is bad bad on older Black rubber products. That is why all the new gas related stuff is Blue or Tan, that shows that it's Ethanol safe.
