Anyone know of a very small radio with just AM/FM? The space I would like to use is only 2.5" deep and 4" wide. I've done some searching but haven't found anything that will fit. Thought someone here may have already dealt with this situation. Thanks.
Use a radio that has a remote made for a boat. you can put the radio anwhere and the small remote has on/off, channel and vol. Try overtons or ebay
Its a 37 Studebaker. I want to put the radio right above the middle of the windshield where the original speaker opening is. The opening is circular. I would make a mounting plate.
what about those hidden radios with the remote control? you wouldn't have to put anything in the dash at all, and why does everyone on here hate radios? doesn't anyone like to go cruising and listen to their music? i like to listen to the car too but sometimes i like the radio another thing if you find a small enough am fm radio, they sell a gizmo at walmart and other places, it plays mp3's off of a flash drive, over the air through your radio. plugs into the lighter. all the controls are right on it. when you are done you unplug it and throw it in the glovebox. it also lets you plug a portable cd player or mp3 player into it. no wiring or anything. i put my radio under the seat, got a power mirror switch, the small square black ones, painted over the logos on it, then used diodes and eight relays to control the radio with a gutted remote control for it. eight functions easy, four with the mirror switch one way four with it the other way. can operate it with one finger.
http://mobile.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028210&pathId=149&page=1 JVC KT-HDP1 & KV-K1017 (car kit) might work. It has AM/FM and HD Radio WITH A BUILT IN VOLUME CONTROL. The 1/8" stereo output would allow you to use an 1/8" to RCA adapter and plug it into an amp for power. If it will fit in your car, it will work great! I own one and love it. You could also use the 1/8" cable to play other portable media through the amp.
Those old FM adapters for AM car radios are pretty small, too. Or a knob-mount tapedeck might fit, if you drilled holes for the shafts alongside the opening.
someone on here also makes an AM radio modulator that lets you plug in a portable device, it's the only one i've ever seen that works through an AM radio vs an FM. he's in the hambodex i believe,he had a post. as far as making the radio operate with a mirror switch,my camera is tore up but i'll try to explain. each power mirror has two motors, flip the switch one way and one set operates, other way other set operates. you have a motor for up and down movement and one for side to side movement, they will all have a common also, you connect two relays to each motor output, in line with each relay coil, you connect a diode that is opposite of the other relay on that motor circuit, so four relays per mirror side. if you push the up and down on the switch for example, up will make one relay operate, and down will make the other relay operate. the diodes will only allow one relay at a time to operate when the voltage reverses. then it's the same thing on the side to side of the switch. once you build the relay box, you take apart the remote, and solder wires to each circuit trace of the button you want to operate, these wires go to the switched sides of the relays. for example, if the switch is set to left mirror, you can use up and down for volume, and side to side for cd track advance,or station skip. then use the right mirror side for four other functions, such as the radio function button, and whatever three other functions you want to wire in. while you are doing this a small hidden button maby somewhere within reach of the driver, could be used as a radio mute function if yours has one, i have one under my steering colum and it's very useful to shut up the radio in a hurry. you can mount the remote control board inside a small plastic box with the relays, and unsolder and move the IR led off of it to somewhere where the radio can see it. the entire box can hide whereever you can find to put it. as far as powering the remote board, they usually run on a couple of double A batteries, a good set of alkaline ones inside of the box will last a long time. Oh the relays i'm talking about are small electronic ones, all you need are ones with a 12 volt coil. you used to be able to buy them at radio shack, but i don't think they carry electronics anymore.
Screw the radio--go the i-pod route!! There is a great thread on here, a how to do it and it is smaller than a pack of Lucky's. No cd's- no antenna-only way for my money!! Good Luck--~Sololobo~
the one i mentioned from walmart just plugs in to the lighter socket, you can put your mp3's on a flash drive like you load the ipod,or you can plug your ipod into it.
