Hey I was never going to dump the HEMI"S for inliners BUT, I traded a built 396 that I had aquired over the years for very little cash, for a 57 chev 3/4 ton with a 235 and truck 4 speed. had it for six month and never registered or drove it off the property. one day idling it popped and started running rough, died and wouldn't start again. being the v-8 guy that I am I figured it jumped time and needed torn down. being the procrastanator that I am, I towed it to the orchard and parked it for six months (or so!) then when I came across a nice little 235 for minimal cash. I decided it needed to go in the truck. I've had it running for less than a month and a couple days ago it developed a miss. I started with the obvious things, ignition, timing, carb. fianally did a compression check number 4 cylinder has zero compression. zip the needle on the gage doesn't even wiggle. never seen that before. From memory of days gone by when I trashed the shit out of these old motors you couldn't kill one with a club and now I've had two in row go to shit with tender care.
that is exactly my thoughts. I haven't figured out how to check the botom end without draining the oil haha
no valve no compression... Holed piston maybe??? What year is the 235? The early ones had a splash oiling system that sucks REALLY bad...
I had a 235 and I loved it. But I have a hemi too, and it's da bomb. We should all wise-up and stick to mopar and poncho motors, and buick nailheads. Weird motors work better. Everyone I know with a 350 has blown it up. Good luck either way.
Mine seems to work pretty good... Leaks like crazy though. And I don't really beat on it too much. I've seen 0 compression on a 454 once. Had 150 with oil in the cylinder though.
Check the valve adjustment. If it is a solid lifter motor, you can get 0 compression if the valve is adjusted to tight and staying open.
I don't know about yours, but mine did 3000 miles round trip to the HAMB Drags and developed a miss on the way back, needed a cap and rotor and back to normal. I'm still putting a Nailhead in its place though. I wanna tow...
Zman I checked all the normal thing first then pulled the plug wires one at a time with the engine running. the spark is jumping but the cylinder is not firing. thats when I did the compression check. It a 57 motor with a full pressure system. I guess I'll have to drop the pan and find out what going on. It pulled a trailer with my 49 pontiac to the unfinished nationals and back and never missed a beat
If you put a few squirts of oil in the cylinder do you get any compression? Sometimes it'll get rings to temporarily seal.
48Hemi you run that rig up here and I'll swap you straight across for my f1! if its the grey one in that picture and that will solve your 235 problem
[ QUOTE ] try beating the shit out of it. if that dont work use a bigger hammer [/ QUOTE ] use the bigger hammer from the git go. don't force it!!
48 hemi, before you pull the pan, check the valve train man. Pull the valve cover and the rocker cover, rotate the motor and check to see if the valves are seating. BUT FIRST.......... Stick a piece of vaccuum hose in the dead cylinder and rotate the motor and the piston will push it back out if its still connected to the crank. (If its not ,that would be pretty hard to believe.) Don't give up on the old inliner, they have outlasted most of them. ----------------------------------------------------------- OPOSSUM BENDERS Central Mo.
I pulled the valve cover before I did the compression. I was hoping for a stuck valve or bent push rod. everything is working fine
i have more 235 parts then i know what to do with. if u need any thing for it shoot me a pm. i even have a 61 canadian pontiac (chevy) 261. Bryan
[ QUOTE ] let's see the f-1 yeah its the grey ghost in the photo, with the 235 out of this green piece of crap [/ QUOTE ] that "piece of crap" would look much nicer in my yard than yours got a couple kids dieing to labour away at your house til its worked off
My 235 is running still, in the same truck, with the same head gasket as it had when it came from the factory, 44 years ago and about 89000 miles ago. Sure now it's blowing oil out of everything, but it still friggin runs!

this is the last picture of it before I put it away for winter, it has a newer box on it that I have to get some conveyor belt or something to fill in the gap along the top of the fenders til I can find a 48-50 box, needs brake shoes and drums turned, no headliner or anything like that, its got a seat out of some little chrysler car, needs another radiator or this one repaired ( before the front sheetmetal was on kids were twirling wire around and punched it full of little holes ) likely a ton of things I can't recall but its close to driving once its got brakes and a radiator
I had a '54 Chevy truck that had sat ffor years...ddid a tune up and fired the 235 right the hell up! Ran so smooth an quiet that you couldn't even tell it was running when the hood was closed!! I liked the 235, that AntiC had, so much I took it off his hands! That motor was/is STRONG! I did, however, pass it along to another friend...but only beccause I have bigger, meaner plans for the jalopy!! Muwahahahaha! No replacement for displacement! I think you've just had some bad luck...stick with it!
