See my other post of my last buy here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=356670 I did mention that it didn,t run good, however after spending a day searching for what belive was a missfire issue i did check the compression on the cylinders, and it turn out that no3 was reading zero! OK no way back the motor has to be turn down. Guess what I found......
Look for simple first...a common problem with L head engines left sitting too long is a valve sticking open. Have someone rotate engine while you peer down #3 sparkplug hole. If you see a valve stuck open...try just oiling it and tapping it down, rotate and repeat til it oils up. Zero rather than just a poor reading usually means something simply not moving.
Holy Cow! REALLY gone, no sign of broken pieces?? Also may well mean you have a later, maybe mid 1930's built banger...I think before '34 or 5 no seats unless put in for a repair.
Yes most of it are gone, some small parts stuck in piston and also in no4 cylinder but no major issue with the pistons, overall the motor seams overhauled sometime with new pistons and so on, and the valve seat is a poor repair, the motor is a 32 motor. someone have tried to secure the valve seat with some punch marks that maybe cracked the seat?
The plan is to make a cutting tool to reshape the hole perfect with the motor stillin the car and not taking it apart, and then make another seat and press that in place, fine tune the seat and install a new valve and then it,s good to go...
Some guys stake them in with pins. There are also some hi-temp adhesives out there that may help. You could buy oversize seats, but you'd have to have the block machined to fit them.
A tool is made for cuting a new seat for the new seat..... Here we go And finally a fresh seat ready to take a new seat
