Guys, I don't think you can go by a persons post count, just like you can't go by post count to tell how smart a person is.I'm on here 3 or 4 times a day reading, after being on here awhile you get the feel of the people you can trust and who knows what they are talking about.I'm probly a FNG now but I was An alliance member. And will be again soon.
I haven't bought or sold too many items, but have had pretty good luck both ways..there has been a hiccup or two along the line. There has been something recently that got me a little ruffled, however..a FNG with 20 posts selling an item that he produces for over 10% more than he charges on Ebay. Kind of like a reverse HAMB discount.
I did and it saved me $57.20 on the 2 tires I got last week + at the same time the $50 Alliance fee helps support this site . I think it's a real bargain! . This much entertainment is worth more than $50 to me.........Z.
It happens to me more than half the time. I don't even get a FU. Then you have the guys who want every car saved, and you put one for sale at s**** prices, with valid paperwork, and they don't want it. Their are two s**** yards less than 5 miles away, and both pay cash.
but it takes a real ***hole not to realize that the $50 goes towards keeping the board they have been feeding off of for the last 3 years going. also from the rules "Hey folks, due to the increased numbers in the cl***ified section we can no longer police bad deals for everyone. From this point forward, we will only help police deals in which both buyer and seller are Alliance members. For the time being, we are going to keep the cl***ifieds open and free to everyone. However, if you are concerned about safety we recommend that you become an Alliance member and only buy/sell to Alliance members..."
Somewhere near Austin I believe. Dreddybear may remember. He went to the guy's house once & told him that he needed to ship my stuff. JH
Well sometimes i'm late on shipping, but I always let the customer know that i'm gonna be a little behind. As for as people saying they would buy something and then didn't pay, I haven't run into that yet. But I do allot of buisness on the board and so far it's all been on the up and up. 1shot
Be smart... You won't get screwed. It really is that simple. As for selling, nothing is sold until the money is hand. That's how I approach every thing.
It has always really bothered me to see people selling on the HAMB when all 5 or 6 of their posts have been cl***ifieds. Maybe a minimum post requirement to earn the right to post free ad's. Never mind, dirtbags will be dirtbags. It just seems to hurt more from folks you'd like to think are similar to ones self. Howard
My suggestion is UPS - COD Somebody wants to buy it - get your cash ready for when it comes. Somebody wants to sell it ? Send it quick if you want to get paid. Simple and 99% of everyone is covered. As you can see I'm a FNG here I put something on the cl***ifieds and within the hour somebody replied wantn to buy. I thought cool I guess this place is a good place for rodders to talk and trade, sell whatever. But as it goes dude never got a hold of me to finalize deal. I guess I'm lucky I did' nt get stiffed like some of ya but it just leaves a bad taste.
thanks all for input i thought there were some of you that would respond, I have been here a few yrs, i have a 887 100% ebay so i know the drill , a degree in marketing at ou and run a hot rod shop . with that said, i still thought in my feeble mind that strombergs should be offered here as i dont usually do that traditional a car. oh well thanks guys.......................dr50
It was Kris Bluntzer, Hamb name KrisandSarah. He's a young guy from Victoria tx, and was selling parts and not delivering. My buds and I tracked him at the roundup last year and made him make it right with me and I told him he better ship Harrisons stuff. It was clear by how surprised he was he didn't expect to be found. He's changed his phone number a bunch of times. I harr***ed this guy on Harrisons behalf for a while before I lost track of him.
If you are a buyer and you use a CREDIT CARD to pay with Paypal, you are covered. ANYTHING ELSE, buyer with a debit card or a seller (and the buyer used a credit card) you are at risk of getting taken. As for you offering to pay the PP fees, againt the TOS to accept the fees. I could give a rats behind selling a $600 part and losing the 2.9% to fees, its the risk of shipping off the part AND PP taking the money back and having no recourse. Example, a friend of mine sold a Ididit steering column on feepay. It had been altered and the pics and the description CLEARLY showed the alteration. Buyer asks questions and even more pics, no problem. Guy pays with PP with a credit card (not debit) claims the product was "not as described" (I saw the column in person and the feepay ad it was better then described). PP locks down his account till James refunds the money. James says I will refund the money once I get the colum back. Guy runs to his credit card, gets his money refunded AND still has the column. James makes his living on feepay and has no choice but to return the money and cut his loses.
Never sold anything on HAMB, but have bought several times with good results each time. His name escapes me just now, but the guy from CA Bay area that sells leather straps and such really went the extra mile on a deal, even paid the shipping costs on a return on straps which had nothing wrong with them except they weren't gonna work for my application, and the fault was as much mine as his. Good guy. I do prefer to pay by Pay Pal, but have sent money orders. Also, I prefer Alliance members, as these deals are policed. If I have any doubts I do look at post count and join date. Then I look at some of the past posts of the seller and if his posts have mostly been a genuine contribution to the subject at hand that is a plus. If however most of his posts are wise*** cracks, that usually kills it for me. But what really pisses me off is to ask a seller for more info and I get no answer. Example: mag wheels for sale with backspacing not specified, PM for info, no reply. WTF? Don't they have a tape measure and the knowledge to use it? Dave
Not a HAMB purchase, but related. Last fall I found an ALGON intake for a 348/409, contacted the seller, worked out a price and sent payment (USPS Money Order) to the tune of $1500. Seller stated he'd have to dig out the fuel pump and timing cover and that it'd take a few days; I had no issue with that since it was just going to go back on to my own shelves. Long story short, many emails and 5 months later I still had no parts. Finally got the guy to refund my money in full, much to my relief as I figured I was screwed out of it an would need to get the USPS involved. A couple of weeks later it pops up on eBay with some outrageous description ("super rare, it'll be 10 years before you find another, etc, etc") with slow bidding, and the guy emails me asking if I was still interested. Told me he'd honor the previous price even though he expected bidding would go much higher. Final bid, no reserve, was a couple of hundred less than I'd originally offered. I had a nice big laugh at that one; karma can be a real *****. After that experience, I've decided that any big ticket items I buy will be paid for with PayPal and debited from my CC. At least I have some recourse if the parts are a no-show. I understand sellers being hesitant about PP, but I figure if you really want to sell it over the internet, you'll accept PP in this day and age; if you don't trust the guy, don't sell to him.
I would agree with corncobcoupe, i've sold some engine parts and peices over the internet and did the UPS COD. It takes a couple weeks to get your money, but at least they don't get the parts unless they pay up!
I'll admit that I have backed out of a few buys. If the seller gets squirrelly or turns to an ***, I'm keeping my money. I've stepped up a time or two and said I would buy and then back out when I realize it's gonna be more trouble/risk than it's worth.
I usually request a email addy other than their HAMB addy,i correspond some to get a feel to see if they are "really" interested. It might seem like to much effort, but in the end you get your part and you get to know a member a little better.....HAMB'rs are not all a bunch of immature,irresponsible,ignorant,..........guys...or girls!
UPS COD boys ........ and 99% of losing money or parts is resolved. Send it and the guy doesn't pay - you get your part returned to you and yes for a small return fee but you still retain the part. Buy it and the if seller doesn't send it UPS COD then you aren't out 1 dime. Ok here is a good one to remember....... and funny when you think about it........ "I trust no one - even my mom cut me loose on Day 1 and since then I trust no-one - everyday since"
In an effort to make the cl***ifieds better and not just whine how about this... Charge a buck to post an ad and if alliance member it is free. This might cut down on those people that post ads then don't respond to PMs because they never login to check. As a non alliance member I would have no problem paying this because I am serious about selling something here. Costs fifty cents each time you bump your ad back to the top. I don't know about you but I am tired of seeing the same old ads back to the top every few days. Personally I'd like to see bumping to the top available only once a week or two weeks. I take objection to people that say if you don't post on the forum then you aren't part of the community. Well my "write" post count is less than 50 but my "read" post count is in the thousands. I don't feel the need to express my opinion or every idea that comes into my head on this or any other board. I have done a lot with cars over the years and figure things out or try them on my own. Posting on a forum is my last resort. I do try to help out others from time to time but usually others have beat me to it. Am I a part of the community if I only go to a car show instead of entering my car? So all this said I would like to see a count of posts viewed as part of the avatar to "show" others my involvement with this site. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the suggestion but as Ryan has said in the past - The HAMB is not a cl***ifieds sight and it is only done out of courtesy to help guys with Rods /Custom cars and parts. We will not be changing the bump policy to weeks or months. As a Moderator, it has taken a very long time to corral guys to understanding how things work around here and to change ANYTHING now would open up a whole new round of guys not knowing the changes etc. and frankly much more of a commitement that the Moderators would be able to handle. I do this because I enjoy it - I donate my time when I can , but am commited to see that things run smooth as much as possible. So taking liberties here with Ryan - we won't be changing the bump policy anytime in the future. As far as charging $ - I'm not sure that was what Ryan ever intended to be in this for the money but just the administrative costs of tracking would be a large task. As far as guys who don't pay - or don't ship parts ...well this much I do know... The car community is a very small world and eventually what goes around -comes around. Guys who fail to live up to the honor, eventually.... will be identified and frankly - I hope shamed for not fulfilling a deal. Word gets around and eventually catches up to the perpetrator. My suggestion to all is to use UPS COD to make transactions and 99% of the cl***ified transaction problems would disappear. Thanks, Cob Cl***ifieds Moderator
You don't think Kris changed his name to Joe do you??? I know that its a risk any time you do business with someone you've never met in person, but I'd always thought if I could call the guy up and talk to him on the phone there was a pretty good chance it was a square deal. That was before Mr. Grey came along.....now I'm leary about doin' business with anyone who lives more than a tank of gas away.
Amen to that, sometimes you just get a bad vibe about a guy and think maybe it isn't a good idea.......
if i ever post anything and treat you like that you have permission to kick my a$$. i may be new but im honest and courteous
hey i was just reading the posts..and so far i have bought and sold here.with no problems .i do have a ebay store so i am used to most of the pitfalls. but i have to say that i have never had a problem here yet!!..except for the guys who have me running all over the yard taking pictures and figuring shipping..a few times i even removed the parts then never heard back or they changed their minds..thats why now i just ask to be paid for the part before removing then after i get it ready to ship and know the cost get paid for that. some guys want to pay just once but its hard to do because i dont like spending hours removing parts then the guy changes his mind and im out the time and work..plus have to figure how and where to store the part till i get another sale for it........well thats as clear as mud ..ha ha ha ha ..i guess i need to just stay reading posts ..ha ha ha ha
Maybe a feed back rating option similar to ebay? I dont think post count says alot- I see a lot of spambers on here.
