again, i am trying to do as much as possible before the heat arrives. no air in the garage. this is my first 32 project and i did search. i also tried to call tanks inc. today but everytime i phoned them, it was busy. i purchased a 32 style fuel tank from tanks inc. so here goes: 1. what size hard tubing for the fuel lines for a 327 chevy? 2. i am ***uming that one hole is for fuel sender and one for pickup? right? 3. where would i purchase these items? thanks and remember this is the first time i have done this.
!.I use 3/8 line for mine 2.yes one hole for each 3. When you buy a gas gauge, get the proper sender for it, I re-tubed my original pickup from old 32 tank, or just make one up, a round hole sawed metal,1/4 inch thick or so,thread center for a br*** elbow, screw a 3/8 barbed fitting for rubber hose or use 3/8 steel tubing with flare and nut,(brake line) for the tube into the tank, use 3/8 steel line (like brake line) cut to proper length (depth) If you want to talk to Tanks...send them a fax that says...call me @ **x-****, their line is always busy, they will return your call.
I use 3/8" hard line in stainless steel but plain steel works just fine too. What are you going to be using for a fuel guage? Usually the sender will come with a guage package (like Autometer) or is available from the guage maker to match the ohm requirement of the fuel guage, and it should bolt into the tanks tank with no problems. I have always made my own fuel pickups by cutting a round disc the proper size 12-14 guage steel. I then weld a 1/4" bung in it for the fuel vent (preferably one with roll over protection check valve) and then weld a 3/8" tube into it that will end about 1/2" above the tank bottom. You can put a OEM type sock on it to keep anything big from getting lodged in the pickup tube. The tube will have to have a small radius 90 degree bend or a 90 degree el where it comes out the top to avoid hitting the bottom of your trunk floor. I point it towards the p***erger side frame rail where it will connect to your fuel line on the frame rail. My fuel filter is mounted to the frame rail in that area too. Hope this helps.
thanks guys. but i am not as talented as you are so where can i buy a pickup for a 32 tank? and where can i buy a sender for a 32 tank? i don't even think i have seen them in the cl***ifieds. thanks
If you bought your tank from "Tanks", it should have come with the fuel pickup, roll over valve/ vent, and the rubber gaskets for the pickup and sender. All of the ones I've bought came that way. Look in the bottom of the box, that stuff is usually included in a bag. Dave
My Vintique tank came with the pickup to suit and the gauge shop calibrated a VDO sender to suit my 40 fuel gauge which I'm using. The sender was a universal one to suit various depths of tanks and matched the hole pattern on the Vintique tank. swifty
If yours did not come with a pickup contact Tanks and ask......fax them with the question and your ph #, they can call you, you will never get thru their fax is 320 558 4439 if you get nowhere, let me know maybe I can help some more.....Dale
I am using a *TANKS* '32 fuel tank and it came with instructions, gaskets, and the fuel pickup fitting......one tube goes down in and is cut off at a diagonal for the pickup, and the other tube is your vent, unless you need a return as some modern/fuel injected engines require.... Call TANK's for sure......you should have gotten the whole shebang! CB
I'm also using a Tank's tank and it came with a pick-up vent ***'y. I did need to cut the tubes to the right length. May be your fuel pump is so powerful it ****ed it right out of the tank Ha ha. Later Ed
ok i found it. so the small line in the middle is for the vent. i would plug one of the other fittings because i don't need a return because i am using a 327 with 3 carbs, correct?
oh and the gas gauge i am planning on using as of right now is an old stewart warner gas gauge. so i would probably have to go to the stewart warner web site and order a sender from them. also you want rubber line on both sides from the frame to the fuel pump on one side and the fitting on the tank on the other side?
The sender hole is the generic aftermarket pattern, so get whatever will work for your guage. Since the tank is mounted solidly to the frame, you can hard line directly to the pickup, but a short section of fuel hose makes it easier to remove and install if the body is on. Dave
Stewart Warner fuel gauges use a sender that is 240 ohms empty and 33 ohms full , you should be able to get one at Napa
