Pasadena Roadster Reliability Run...this Saturday..lotsa pics!

This will be our first run. Just back from the VCRA rally in Joplin and we'll have all the decals in place.

 

Update, the top is going on my roadster so pack your sunscreen & a hat the sun is bound to shine

 

Steve......I hope your right.....looks like a wet one is predicted though. Its rooster tails down the freeway to get there i suspect.

Do you own a roadster? Maybe do a search on this event and you might actually get a feel for the event & the history. This is one event I want to see when I come to the US.

If you have a roadster you can register at the event, but they cap it at 100 cars.

 

Actually, staring at the Fourth Reliability Run it was opened up to coupes, which I pointed out to them..... but they weren't interested.....

No, I don't. I own a '31 coupe. This is why I call them eliteists.

To my understanding, they don't allow coupes.

 

So, evidently they weren't initially eliteists, but, somehow, somewhere, someone put a stick up their a#*.

Rod runs can get out of hand to manage with too many cars. I'm sure this is the primary reason for the invite only. I'll admit the "invite" part can get a bit snooty sometimes. That's just the way it is with classic cars, vintage racers, traditional hot rods and orgies.

 

If it wasn't invitation only, Gawd knows what would show up.
This is the same location used to start the Horseless Carriage Run every Holiday season. Each year some jerk would always blend ito the line with a fiberglass street rod. His attitude was that "its a public road".
Although that is true, it is a shame that some clown has to ruin the purity of an event.
There's always ONE that messes it up.
There's a big difference between "right" and "wrong" but it is separated by a fine invisible line.

 

Except for the fact that I know they have previously allowed fiber glass cars before, soley on the basis that they were roadsters. Me, I think its horse pucky.

I would like to thank, on behalf of the Pasadena Roadster Club, everyone on this message forum who shows their support by participating in our Reliability Runs. We put on the event, but it is all of you and your wonderful cars that make this event so special. I would also like to thank all of the members of the PRC , as well as all of their friends and families who come out to help, for their hard work and dedication.

The original PRC was active from 1945 thru some time in 1953. The PRC was reactivated in 2002 to carry on the tradition and preserve the history of the original club. As such, it was decided by the founding members that for a car to qualify for the PRC it must be a 1936 or older, American-designed open hot rod (roadster, roadster pu, cabriolet, touring/phaeton) using only components of a design origin of 1953 or older (which coincides with the last year the original club operated.) Reproduction bodies of any material or reproduction chassis’ are not allowed, only genuine major components are acceptable.

Starting in 1947, the original PRC held a series of 5 Reliability Runs. These runs were used to counteract the public, press and law enforcements negative feelings about hot rods and to prove that hot rods were reliable machines and could co-exist safely with regular motorists. The rules strictly stated that all participants would follow all the rules of the road at all times or they would be disqualified.

In 2004, the re-activated PRC held it’s first re-running of the Reliability Runs which started and finished at the Pasadena Rose Bowl and followed exactly the original route from the 1947 run. The sole purpose of the current Reliability Runs is to, as closely as possible, re-create the original runs with a large field of invited, pre-selected cars that represent the era in which we are trying to re-create.

To have your car accepted to participate in the Reliability Run it must outwardly adhere to the same 1953 and older component standards as our own club cars. Hot rods with reproduction bodies and / or chassis are accepted as long as they adhere to the visual standard. Hot rods with post 1953 engines and drive trains such as small blocks and automatics are generally accepted as long as they are fully concealed. We try to be as lenient as we can without jeopardizing the purity of the Run. However, the acceptance of any car is fully at the discretion of the PRC.

We have also been aware that the original PRC ultimately accepted a small number of coupes to participate in the Reliability Run. This subject was fully discussed and it was decided that we would limit the run to open cars only. We also have a cap set at 100 entries. The single biggest reason for this is that we are a small club of just 15 members and we simply do not have the man power to handle much more than this. And, with all of the equally period-correct coupes that are out there our entries could easily double and this is not something we are capable of handling.

The PRC is not an elitist club. We are a small group of like-minded people trying to preserve our favorite era of American hot rodding and we set our standards high to keep our club and its event as pure as we possibly can. Without these standards, the Reliability Runs would be just another “come one, come all” event and the historical significance lost. There are similar events, but there is no other like what the PRC offers - as many as 100 truly traditional roadsters and open hot rods doing what they were meant to do - DRIVING.

Thanks Dennis for 1 putting on a very special event that I for one am honored to be included in & 2 for posting the very spirit & reasons behind the event so concisely , I'll see you in an hour .

 

Sounds to me like they are living in the past, or attemting too, anyway.

From my own prespective, it is better to appreciate the past, maybe even relive some glory moments, but, these guys seem to be stuck in it.

 

Isn't that what "tradition" is all about?

There is a difference between respecting tradition and being stuck in the past. With so many problems this country has, we will not solve them by living in the past, but instead, by returning to some of the core values of the past; that's the difference. We can apply this same ideology to our hot rod world with out acting like eliteist and seperatist like those that abound in some hot rod circles.

That is what's wrong with this country today. No unity. Are we not all hot rod enthusiasts? So then we be exclusionary and dis-allow certain types of hot rods, because, they are not roadsters?
