New to the forums, thanks in advance for your knowledge. I am looking to pick up a '64 Comet wagon next week, but haven't seen it yet. Dude says he drives it occasionally. I am assuming it has the 170. I am fairly new to that body, are there any specific areas I should check besides the usual? (i.e, odd places that develop rust)

All the 60's Fords have rust problems in the cowl vent plenum. It's a royal pain to repair requiring removing the windshield and drilling out aprox. 150 spot welds. Most of them are rusted out to some extent and allow water onto the front floorboards so they're usually rusted out too. Love the '64-65 Comets. good luck.

Thanks much, I had forgotten about that....my buddy used to have a '65 mustang that had quite a bit of rust in that area. I really appreciate your input on this.

    Check the torque boxes carefully.

Thanks Mutt, will do. I'm not expecting it to be in great shape, but I'm hoping it will be structurally sound.

Check for shock tower and subframe rust under, and around the battery box.

Well, I went and looked at that Comet today. Unfortunately for me, it was a little more complete than what I expected. Very solid car, OK paint, and the guy was asking more than I was looking to spend. It was nice seeing it though, brought back some memories. Thanks all for your input on my original post.
