Hey I've been looking on the HAMB & other reference websites to try and work out where exactly the serial number (not the engine id number that shows it's a 352 or 390 etc) is located. The serial number is meant to be the specific identification for any given engine within the series. The number identifies it as the x number out of x number built within that series. I need this number to get registration sorted out in Australia but no luck yet. Any ideas? Thanks
Ford Motor Company didn't begin to put the partial VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the block/heads until the 68-69 MY. The casting date code would help determine if it should have such a code. Also, VINs weren't normally transferred to service parts, Rod. Edited: Sorry, but heads weren't stamped on Fords. 2nd Edit: I've just learned CJ heads may have the partial VIN stamped on the head. http://www.network54.com/Forum/7594...ped+on+the+head+rather+than+the+block+on+CJ's
If it is a post 1968 engine it will usually be stamped into the rear of the engine either on a deck just behind the intake or on the rough casting just below the driver's side cylinder head. If it is in the rough casting it may be very hard to see. If the engine is in a car it is sometimes impossible to see due to lack of room and very light stamping. Look at the date code on the block located just above the oil filter adapater (looking up from the bottom of the engine) to see if it is a 1968 or later that will have a VIN.
Earlier ford engines ( pre 68 ) had the info on a metal tag , usually bolted down with one of the coil mounting bolts. If this is unmolested the tag should still be there. Good luck Dave
I have a 1967 289 that has the vin stamped on it but I think that mid or late 1967 is the first time that Ford started doing this.
Hi all, thanks alot for your feedback. This engine comes out of a '67 F100. The casting date code looks like 29D11 and in the same area, on the machine surface, is the number 7A18H and just above that is a stamped letter B. The casting number on the RHS of the block is C6ME-A, which i think is right for a 67 F100. Any more help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Looks like a January 18, 1967 built truck 390. I highly doubt that it would have a VIN or sequential stamping number on it that early. The C6ME means 1960's (C), 1966 (6) which indicates the date of the design upgrade for that casting.
Hey man, had the same problem awhile ago with a customers Mustang trying to get it rego'ed for the first time in Australia. Ended up having to get a 'police number' from the coppers and stamping it on the block. This was in A.C.T. but pretty sure vic would be the same. Number is just a random one issued by the police (or maybe R.T.A.) I just stamped it on the oil pan rail back near the bellhousing because it was a machined surface that was easy to get to with a letter punch set.
Thanks James for the info. Matt great thanks I'll go down this path now and see who issues the numbers in Vic. Cheers Flatbrad
