  2. Georgia does not require an inspection other than emissions testing in the metro Atlanta counties, and your car is old enough to be exempt from that. You don't even need a title on a vehicle that old, all you have to have is a bill of sale and proof of insurance, which is all I have ever had on my '38 Ford pickup (which I have owned since I was 14, now 57) and my '55 Ford (which my parents bought new). Georgia never did title vehicles older than '62 model year and doesn't require titles on vehicles over 15 years old. Georgia used to have a safety inspection, started in '64, but dropped it in the mid '80s.

Being you have a title and registration from Louisiana, you've got no worries. The DMV will give your title back to you and tell you it isn't required on that model. Still, it is good to have as proof positive of ownership. What you've probably heard about GA inspection, is what's already been said about smog inspection in some counties, but there is a newer law that requires inspection, by a cop or sheriff's deputy, to verify the VIN when no title cars and trucks change ownership. I doubt that will apply to you, since it is already your car. Good luck, and welcome to Georgia...

Should be no problem. I hope your '64 is exempt from the smog check BS...I think it is, but don't know, because we don't have that to deal with here in Macon...yet. Also, they will issue an antique plate for that car. How that came about, I don't know, but it's a pretty cool idea. Someone in the legislature must have been a car guy...probably Van Street, but unfortunately, he 's no longer there.

  6. The only inspections will be when you come up to the swap meet or meet the SFCC for breakfast at the skillet.

  7. Georgia will also allow you to run a Year of Manufacture GA tag on 1970 model and older. Just find a '64 GA tag in presentable shape and take it in to the county tax assessor's office (that's where you buy car tags in GA) when you register your car. They will register the '64 tag to the car and give you a document showing that the tag is registered to the car. You will also get a current Hobby/Antique tag, which you have to carry in the vehicle but don't have to display.

  8. Well there is the little about paying for the plate. It's easy, and inexpensive, just not free!

Things have changed in GA folks. The inspection that you're talking about is for all out of state cars.
You might be able to skip the inspection if the title is signed and notarized.
Otherwise, you need to have an officer of the court inspect the VIN tag on the vehicle to make sure it matches the paperwork.
You can download the form from the county web site, or you can go to a Tag Office and ask the officer that's on duty there if he'll walk out and sign off on the VIN Inspection.
It's pretty harmless, they just want to make sure that the paperwork matches the actual vehicle.

That's good news, 38. I just wonder what kind of confusion it will cause at the DMV here in Macon. I certainly don't want to be the first to try it, but will fall in line later.

  11. Unless it's a new clerk, first day on the job or something, they will be familiar with the process for registering Year of Manufacture tags. By the way, the correct '64 tag for your car will have a J in the middle of the number, mid size car have no letter, really heavy cars have an A, moderately heavy cars have a J, compacts have a D, T was for trailers, pickup trucks have an R, those are the ones I remember. The first part of the tag number indicated the county (county rank in population on the 1960 census 1-159), last part of the number indicated the sequence in which the tag was issued.

yup the only thing is if you dont have current registration, you have to have a peace officer come out and run the vin (or serial) to make sure its not stolen. I had to do it on my El Camino and i had to do it on my flat bed trailer.

  14. Right county, but R tag is for a pickup truck. A GTO being a mid-size car, correct tag would have no letter between the county code and tag number.

The form I believe is a T-22b vin verification form. Easy to have done. Print it out online and call your county sheriffs office, they will come out and do the vin verification (free) and you will be good to go. Take it and your title or bill of sale to the tag office.

    Hers the form:

  18. I was looking at a car on Ebay today, a 1961 Country Squire and the man selling it gave this as the reason he has to sell the car

It has a clear "open" title from the previous owner of 16 years but in the State of Georgia the DMV will not title anything older than 1964 so I was unable to "title" the car in Georgia. The car is near <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on">Atlanta</st1:City> and will be sold with a bill of sale accompanied by the <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">California</st1:place></st1:State> title.

He say the car has good Ca. title but he can't reg. it in Ga.? I've never heard of a state that has a year restriction on reg. out of state cars, if this is true it's a little scary, whats next??
    any input Ga. HAMBers?

  19. What the guy is saying makes no sense. All he needs to register that car is a bill of sale and proof of insurance. If he has a good title on it from another state, he certainly shouldn't have any problems. Georgia won't issue a title for a '61 model, but they will be more than happy to sell him a tag for it.

Yep, sounds like the seller is an idiot...dealt with an idiot at the tag office or just has a lame excuse for selling his car.

When we bought my wifes 54 Chevy it came with a good TN title. The state wouldn't issue us a new georgia title due to it's age. They did however have no problem taking our money for a tag and have had no problem sending the renewals to us since then.
