i got a crack in the left exhaust manafold on a 65 caddy thats leaking i have a good one coming but won,t be here for about 2 weeks as anyone every used it for a exhast leak and did it work?
****, if its only for 2 weeks, blob that **** in there and i'll bet it will work. may smoke a smidgen on startup, but it soon stops, I used it on a 3' downpipe once for a quick repair and it did fine. I did have a clean surface to start with though. with a cast manifold, wire wheel it if you can and blob it in. be happy
Don't know about the exhaust, but my dad once used it to seal a crack in a tractor block and it held fine.
I did it on the left manifold on my '64 Caddy. Got about 5 miles down the road and it all burnt off. I first got a horrible smell, pulled over and popped the hood. Found the JB weld bubbling, sizzling, smoking, and dripping off the manifold. Oh well, I thought it was going to work pretty well, then I thought wrong.
All that the JBweld and any other "muffler cement" does is make a big mess that someone will have to spend a lot of time cleaning it all off so that it can be properly repaired. So many times I could have made a 10 dollar weld but no...harry homeowner had to muck it all up with muffler cement.
Teddy, too bad you don't have a Dillon torch salesman doing a demonstration near your house...hahaha! To all you others....one year I took my 54 Chevy to Gettysburg, and the exhaust manifold actually broke in half! Well, there was a guy there, demo-ing the Dillon (Cobra, Mk 4, whatever) and good old Ted hooked me up with him..and he used my manifold as a demo piece and welded it up for me, right at the show. And the thing held up for quite a long time, until Ted, again coming to the rescue, picked up a single one at Englishtown for me! I know you don't want to pull that thing off, and bring it all the way down here to fix temporarily...but if your other deal falls through, I'll gladly weld it up for you!
Read the instructions. It's only good to 600* or so. A water cooled block doesn't get that hot, but exhaust gas temperatures can run 1200-1600* or so on water cooled engines.
Cast iron welding rod, old school, electric welder, i did it for repair, worked,,,,,,forget j liquid b, thats a dream.
I've used chimney cement before to temporarily fix a blown out exhaust manifold gasket. Worked fine. It comes in a caulking type tube. Just cure it per directions. It is black in color.
Some of that orange high temp.gasket maker silicone should get you through a couple weeks,if you dont have a welder. It worked for me!
