My '51 shoebox had been swapped around Ebay 3 times beofre I got. I am guessing nobody wanted to replace every sqaure inch of floor pan (including the trunk) I wasn't skeered so I picked it up. The trunk was rusted shut, I used a sawzall to cut the trunk open (I was gonna french in a tag anyway) and low and behold- 2 feet of rats nest. I filled a 55-gallon drum twice with this shit and that was just the trunk. I hate shit, especially rodent, so I was covered up with respirator and gloves. The doors were full of shit too. I foud the culprtit, albeit a little skinny. 8" long rat carcass. The floors are done now, looks like a totally different car.

when I first landed my olds back here in N.Z even after all the official fumigation and inspection I was paranoid about a snake or spider, never saw anything thank god, I figure down here with no snakes and only extreamly rare and localised poisin spiders that we have a very low tollerance for such things.
Oh I saw a possum in california once they are ugly I thaught it was a huge rat !

  5. Christ, The worst thing that Boones left me were about a million ball-point pens that keep jumping out from above the windshield when I hit a bump.

You didn't leave any mummified corpses in there for me - did you Boones?

I shouldn't have looked at this thread just before lunch. Man, some of those pics are gross!

  8. when i worked on my Pontiac Stratochief, the roof was full of mice nests i think there were 5-7. the worse was i had to crawl through the opening after i removed the back seat i (had a mask on) to unlock the truck. one the trunk popped open i seen all the dried up mice. I was still stuck in the car so i tried not to freak out with all the death. was towing a studebaker m-17 up the trailer i sat in that truck for quite a few minutes steering it and braking to re line the winch when i got out a squirrel followed me. worst is old grain trucks looked okay in side till once again you took the roof off it poured mouse shit. under the seat was the same, and a weasel used it as a hunting ground for awhile too. I hate cleaning them out but you gotta do it. i just do it outside, fully covered and wearing disposable gloves and sometimes old work gloves on top for rougher work and a proper mask, and try not to touch my face. Fan and vacuum cleaner and a close burning barrel helps.

My car has been in my friend's backyard for 5 months now(no windows) and is *full* of spiderwebs. Not a big deal, except I found a black widow living inside one of my wheels, freaked me the hell out.

I read up on it, in NA the male black widow spider bite won't hurt you, but the female will make you sick as hell in a couple of hours (chills/ fever, aches, etc) and you should go to the hospital. It evidentally won't kill you, but just f you up good.

I had already cleaned out my 57 and started working on it, pulled the front sheet metal, and engine, and I was sitting between the front cross member when my ASS started burning, I got up went inside and found a 9 inch red spot on my right ass cheek. I went to the doctor 2 days later and he said I had been bit by a black widow, and that if the skin didn't start to heal up within a couple weeks we were going to have to do a skin graft from my back:eek:! I said whoa!, doc I'd rather loose ass skin than back skin... but luckily it started healing.

  14. I was in a junk yard lookin for a computer for a Caddy. Found a Caddy opened the door and sat in it to take dash apart to get to computer. I smelled this awful stink and jumped out. The smell stayed with me all through the yard. I asked about the Caddy at the office they said someone died in the car and was in it for days. Now I'm more careful about opening car doors when the car looks in good condition and sitting in a junk yard.

Spiders are one thing I`d totally forgotten about when dealing with old cars.....

So much for the idea of me bringing home a wreck to clean up myself....

I think I`ll pay someone else to do it... or wear a space suit...

I did the final touches on a 60's Jag ( the cigar looking kind) for a guy. He had the car completely restored, after finding is in a barn. He spent 78 grand for a ground up resto. After all was said and done we got every thing working including the defrost, heater, air etc. Only to discover that some sort of rodent had died in the ducting. The way those cars are built you cannot get to all the areas in the ducting. Smelled like dead animal so bad once after the first time it was warmed up that he ended up selling it for 14,000 dollars a month later. What a bummer!

I was parting out a 1975 MII for the drivetrain, front and rear. The car had leaky t-tops, and was full of misc old bottles of oil and tranny fluid. There was a nasty taxic sludge floating around everywhere with bugs and mice drown in it. I had to pull out the seats cuz i wanted the subframe all the way back.

Just got two this weekend...4 inches of rat shit wasn't any fun...and spiders suck. No dead bodies or anything, but it was definitely nice and dirty.

I had two dead cats one on each side of the engine in my F1 truck. I didnt see them when I bought it.
I hauled the truck from Iowa to Ohio and started taking the front end off. They were so dried up I thought they were rags until I saw the heads. Nasty.
I had to pry them off the frame and bury them out back.

Picked this up for $300 a few years back. If you look real close you can see a skeleton of some sort (cat? Possum?) in the rear floor just under the driver's seat.

I had another car, a 65 Barracuda that was infested with black ANTS. If you moved the car or bumped into it they would all come crawling out of everywhere and fill the interior. I parked it next to another old parts car and they infested that too.

I haven´t had that kind of problems, affortunately. However I can suggest this for someone that has to clean a dirty car: You can start by putting a lot of Raid Max (or similar powerful insecticide...) spray all the interiors, engine, trunk, and below the car. Leave it a couple of days so that the odor goes, then you can clean ---using an appropiated nose/mouth mask , goggles, gloves---. You can now retire the seats and send them to the upholstery job a.s.a.p., (ask to change all the material on the seats.) Remove and throw away the carpet, etc. A vaccum machine can be used --- but be sure to wash that vaccum machine well, if not you could take spiders, other insects, bacterias or viruses to other place---- could be your home or office!!! You can also desinfect some car areas with a mix of chlorine/water, and also you can use a steam machine. That´s it. If you can I think is better to pay for the job.... ahh, one more thing: take care when you get home: take a good bath and be sure not to take germs/insects into your bed ( from your clothes )... That´s only my opinion , Good Luck.

ANOTHER suggestion: to go to a vaccination place and ask for the tetanus vaccine.
