HA....it eventually does! Yeah he is a very cool dad. If you look at the link to my photo album on my sig you can see the whole car which he is building for me. It was cool growing up with a dad like him because he was always building cars. Now he's retired and does it fulltime.
From Dad today: Here's a picture of the steering drop all together and mounted. There's a 1/4'' of clearance between the head and drop. I found a box of old #40 chain made in the USA (Diamond brand) that I've got coming to replace the china **** I used for setup.
Top marks for thinking out side the square. I'd like to see pic's of the steering wheel end when you get a chance. Look after that dad he is a gem.
not to knock his ablity..probably better that he made it himself.. but there is this very part manufactured and sold.. cool *** build
Yeah but that part only costs 600 dollars and is it made offshore or in the U.S....? You have a Great Dad and a Great looking car.....
yes ..true...and i dont know how much they cost.. but the idea isnt new. or out of the box as some were implying. still dam awesome no matter how you slice the build or the tallent
As soon as we get the steering side done I'll post some pics of it. Thanks and yes he is a great dad to have!!
Just a suggestion, but make opening the cover and checking for chain slack something you do, say, every oil change, at least at first. Over time you'll get a better feel for how long to check it, but this is definitely not a install and forget it kind of part. That said, your pop made a good lookin' and solid part for ya
Thanks for your comments! I appreciate the compliments on my Dad's work. I have to give him all of the credit as I just come up with some of the ideas and he takes them and runs with them! We were talking about the ones Speedway sells (around $600) and the next thing I know he tells me he made one. And you are correct it's not an original idea by any means and there's no way I would spend that kind of dough on an aftermarket part like that. It just shows what can be done with some talent and some tools.
Thanks man!! I appreciate your comments! Yeah it's always kind of an experiment to see how things will work and how long they will last. And with a safety item like this you have to be carefull. With the adjustment rail I should be able to take the slack out of the chain by adjusting it like a normal steering box. It beats using a f'n dozen u-joints and/ or having the steering shaft in the way or your feet or at some weird angle. I'm pretty big so I need as much room in the ****pit as I can get!
If you can build something that works and save yourself $600 bucks in the process, that is what the hobby is all about. Fabricators and innovators are what drives this hobby. Tell your dad he did a great job with the offset steering unit. You are soooo lucky to have him!
No doubt dude..your dad and you rock.. F..speedway anyhow..its probably made in (another country) (or had the idea ripped off from some hard working american)and 600 bucks!..thats just way too much..besides..yours was made here..by an american.. and it fits the build right, and dont look like a gold chainer part. keep the pictures coming on this one..i wanna see it when its done
I will tell hime for sure and I thank you for your comments!! I am lucky he is great dude. He's taught me a lot over the years, one of which is: why buy something you can build yourself.
Thanks Man!! I will keep the pics coming. If you click the link in my sig you can see my album of the A. I am getting excited about the car as it is getting more and more done all the time. The goal is end up with a car that can be driven to the drag strip and run and also cruised. We are going to install a roll bar, not sure if it will be a full cage or just a loop cross braced to the rear and with some side bars coming up through the door openings. I think I may need those if I run in the 10's, gotta figure that out still.
As requested fiftyv8. The shaft runs through a pillow block bearing that is mounted to the dash x-member. I'm shopping for a quick disconnect steering wheel mount now.
