    So heres the symptoms:

    trans occasionally doesn't shift.
the shifter occasionally gets stuck and wont move.
    occaisionally works fine.

    all i know.

What kind of box would be helpful. If it's something with external shift linkages I'd be having a pretty good look at them. When you say your shifter jams, are the linkage rods touching and not letting anything move anymore?

Thats a good place to start. If the clutch is not disengaging and binding up the trans I would check your adjustment also.

Raise the car up and put jack stands under it in all four corners, or put it on a rack. Have someone in the car to shift it in and out of the gears, while you are under it watching what is going wrong. Watch your hands, so you don't get hurt. I they try shifting into (let's say) second gear and it won't go, have whoever is shifting not do anything while you remove the shift rod and try manually moving into second.

It sounds like your linkage needs adjusting to me, but check it out.

Still need to know what kind of transmission. Make, specific transmission type, floor or column shift. It all makes a difference.

And for what it's worth, I thought the purpose of the forum was to talk about traditional hotrods.

It sounds like a 3 speed column or floor shift . If I am correct check your neutral settings . Also check your bushings if there are any left . I will guess it's locking up from 1st to 2nd gear shift . Had a 60 Chevy p/u that did that all the time . Column shift was worn out . If that's it the cheapest way to fix is convert to floor shift .
He's the FNG and trying to fit in , that's all so give him a break !
We were the FNG one time too !
I will agree that the more information we have the easier the problem can be fixed ! :D

Check the bushings on both sides of the linkage. if they are worn out
it could hang up between 1st and second if you have a 3 speed or 2nd
and 3rd on a 4 speed. Try to be more ****ific.

  8. My traditional M***ey Ferguson 135 has the same problem.

    1. Trash talking ****s.

    2. If you want tech advice, you gotta give up all the details.

  11. I'll answer the question as all these A-holes cant figure it out.
First off if it shifts most of the time and then the shifter hangs up and you cant shift, it sounds like the shifter itself. As far knowing what transmission you are running, obviously its a manual and most all manuals operate the same, push clutch in, shift, let clutch out. Uh duh!! Some of these guys on here are just plain 3rd grade educated as per their posts. My money is on the shifter, rod bushings, worn shifter plates in the shifter, if the trans shifts normally most of the time. ( most common shifting problem)I have had 7- 4 speeds in muscle cars and 2 of the cars had the same symtom that you have descrided albet briefly. I use to have to get out of the car and manually pull the shifter rod that was sticking under the car in into neutral, get back in the car and drive again until the infamous Hurst worn out shifter sticking syndrom hit again.
New guy wants an answer and I give it to him. Learn from it instead of being a bunch of *****s. I don't understand why you need much more info than what he said even though it may help some of you. Go back to school and learn how to answer a guys question. This may be the next years lesson (4th grade).
Hey it could have been worse. "I have a transmission and it doesn't act right, can anyone help"?
He let you know it is a manual transmission, the symptoms are also known.

FINALLY! someone with the common courtesy to simply answer the question without rude remarks! thank you kindly whippet. Now with that diagnosis i can actually ATTEMPT an action in pursuit of the answer! And no i will not apologize to those who were rude because my status reads FNG, which in their minds allows them to talk down to me. And no i will not leave because people cant have a civil conversation in regards to automotives whether it be a "traditional" rod or whatever! a transmission is a transmission and utilizes the same principles; therefore i shouldnt be shunned for asking a question in regards to the latter. For those of you incapable of understanding these big words, dont digress, its simply the english language; get educated.

those of you who actually provided a positive and useful insight, it is greatly appreciated. to the rest, reap what you sow.
