si mon.....the shop is *****in. here is some more. the old 216, stripped ready to pull the new 235, patiently waiting for me to get my sh*t together
the cluster flub,...pulling engine and ******. had to use two hoists. got it out and noone got smashed. at this point i was really not excited about putting the new engine in. i thought "if its gonna be this difficult this is bullsh*t". luckily the new engine has side mounts and lifts nice and smooth.
pushed her out in the yard to rest over night and pressure wash in the morning. few of the other projects we have going kept her company. ready to blast
pressure washed and ready to test fit new motor....lined up on the old mounts perfect....scored it and drilled out the timing cover.
final resting spot...bolted in. she is coming out one more time for final "detail" and clutch install. then its the 12volt swap and she is ready to roll roll roll.
I would have painted that before you popped it in! Would look great with a fresh coat of Chevrolet blue!
here is a shot of the custom 4 bbl intake, cant wait to hear this thing run. and a few shots of the shop
53PDX....you were too quick....she is comin out more time for paint. trying to decide on a color. eventually she will have a finned valve and rocker cover.
i think i am gonna keep it that red color for now...someone planted a bug in my ear about GOLD....very interesting. saw that thread on here. being a recovering muscle car junkie though theres just something about chevy orange. its up in the air for final color,...for now just touch up the valve cover and keep her red.
Man that looks way dangerous the way you had the chain hooked onto your block. The method I like is to pull the valve cover and use the 2nd to rear center head bolt and one of the thermostat mount bolts, this seems to be very stable and centers the load pretty well.
its actually very stable....its got large washers and bolts going through the side mounts on the motor. the mounts are bolted to the block. it lifts balanced and slides right it. it was a pain in the *** pullin the 216 though. i was nervous doing that....the 235 though is very cooperative and almost wants to be in there.
IN! For the last time....just chsing down all the last minute final details like oil sender, water temp, have to fab up a throttle bracket of some sort, and figure out the clutch return spring.
dropped it off at the muffler shop this morning. 2 inch pipe all the way out to the rear bumper with 23in cherry bombs. should sound pretty good. waiting till they call to say its finished. i dont envy their job,...that split manifold is gonna dump right onto the parking brake ***embly. its gonna be a close fit but their fabricator is some kinda pipe genius.
For next time... The way I normally do it is run one strap between the harmonic balancer and the block and the other one between the bellhousing and the block. It's a little more balanced that way.
yeah hellfish that prolly woulda been better....thats just one long recovery strap though. we worked with what we had....and now that its out and on the shop floor i am trying to figure out how to move it agian.
DISAPPOINT: Muffler man called and said no go on pipes today. they got the driver side done and ran all the way out the back but the p***enger side had a problem. the studs in the manifold werent long enough to start a bolt...now we have to replace the studs. its back in the shop...with one pipe on and one off so we can take care of all the "other stuff". other stuff now includes putting longer studs in that manifold.
Its looking great Dru!!! That thing is gonna screammmm!! You still gonna sell me that chrome valve cover, for my lowly, meak 235 splash oiler??? I figure, having it on mine, would add at least 100 ponies, to my stovebolt!!! LOL Shadetree
yeah no worries....gimme a little bit...i gotta get this motor back to my house. our shop is mile or two away. i;ll let you know when i get it here and can protect the head while the covers off.
UPDATE: Just got home from the shop (2am here) and the car is basically turnkey. Little stuff to finish up like routing some wiring and getting a gas pedal mounted but nothing another few hours cant fix. Turned the key and it fired right off, the first crank. let it run for a minute pumping gas by hand into carb until the fuel pump caught up....and then HOLY SHEEP SHEET! that little ******* has a nasty cam and revs quick. its gonna be bad ***. oh well....finish it off tomorrow and back to the muffler shop to finish the other half of the exhaust. thanks to good buddy used up junk (roger) who was able to heat and pull the old studs while i was at work today. got the new manifold head pipe studs in and about 18 in of pipe on one tube with full exhaust on the other side. this is gonna be one rowdy little sunuva*****. i am gonna try to get some video tomororw.
Damn Dru I wish I could have been there last night. Sounds like you guys made some good progress. I'll try to get by there tonight for sure.
HOLY ****! Took it for a test drive tonight and this thing ****s and gets....look out if you see this thing on the street. It still needs a little clutch adjustment....the pedal is a little stiff and the point where it grabs is a little high in the throw. should be easy to trouble shoot that out. only problem is the alternator isnt charging. its supposed to be a one wire so we ran one wire to the battery positive side. its not putting any power to battery so we need to trouble shoot that too. its on the trailer in front of the house ready to get the other side of the exhaust finished now. its got about 24inches of pipe on the non exhaust side and full exhaust on the other side. should be able to pound it out pretty quick tomorrow. friday night its scuff and shoot for the front fenders where we damaged it and then its ready for paso maria.
Can't wait to hear that thing with the exhaust all finished Dru. It's been a lot of work but it's a hell of a lot of fun ain't it? Hopefully we can get that charging issue sorted out so you can shake it down before Paso-Maria.
i am actually more worried about getting the headlights to work than the charging stuff. i think that alternator will be something simple.
dammit. all we had left to do was spray a little paint, wire alternator, reinstall back seat and then rack up the miles. started engine and notices a god awful knocking noise....chased it down and found the culprit. a big *** dent in the oil pan in the sump. we set it down a little hard unloading it....must have dented pan. i think the oil pump is knocking against the inside of the pan. tomorrow (today i guess) i have to pull the pan, hammer out the dent, and put it back in. sure hope it didnt do any damage....we were soooo close after pulling all nighters all week. roger is the man and another big thanks to him. he made a new wiring harness last night so all my lights work now. hadnt planned on it having to be done but apparently thats part of hot rodding. i was the fetchit and light holder while he wrestled and pulled cloth covered wire through every hole in the car. if hadnt helped with that theres a good chance the car would be sitting in the shop and "just needing wiring" to get on the road. thanks again man. i owe you a bigun.
Hey Dru Hate to here that, but you all will get it done!! Sometimes these ol cars, seem to fight us at every turn!!! Hurry up and get it fixed, so we can see the vids!!!
