So here we go again. This looks worse then the previous bills these ass holes tried to pull off the last time. Obama is actually backing a new Cash for Clunkers bill that they hope will jump start the auto industry. I guess next we are going to start tearing down old houses and building so we can build new ones to jump start house and construction. Heres the link to the report.

I guess everyone should start writing congressmen and senators over this again. I guess they can read??

I wouldn't bet my ass on it. As many times as this has been brought up they sure seem to lack a memory or a half brain. This bullshit idea don't fix nothing. It's not mandatory so people with old cars ain't going to get rid of their rides and the money isn't enough to make someone think that they can afford one of the new high mpg $25000 cars. Maybe if they double or triple the cash and gas was $5/gal, I might give it a quick think.

But as is...No thanks, I'll keep mine.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

It is supposed to help remove 1,000,000 old cars from the roads and replace them with safer/cleaner/newer cars. Here is the issue they fail to realize - most of the old daily clunkers are owned by people who can't afford a new car and/or can't get credit. The bill is just another Washington hot air game to check off a box for re-election that says "Look, I did something for nature."

The way this gangsta is going at it don't think there is any law thats going to protect your ability to own or drive your old car (private property). If you don't believe it ask those that supposedly have secured debt in chrysler.

Thought efforts of SEMA, and others, had stopped this. Guess it is so we will all go out and buy new cars ftom the top heavy car companies that our taxes are being used to bail out.

It would be voluntary, of course, so what the big deal? You want to trade it in for cash, then do. If not, don't.
I won't miss K-cars or old minivans...sheesh

I don't like it either but but this bill isn't really aimed at hotrods (making this thread o/t?). It's more aimed at mid 70's and up shit cars. That said it is still a stupid plan. As was said, people that drive these cars generally can't afford a newer car, $4500 dollar credit or not. But the cars we like to work with here will be safe. The VAST majority of people who have registered vehicles that predate '70 know they would get more selling the car to a private party than to the program. Either way, this proposal is an absurd waste of tax-payer money. There have been dozens of threads on this already though

So the idea is that the government would give you a "voucher" (whatever that is) for UP TO $4500 to get rid of your gas-guzzling clunker and get a more fuel efficient ride. The article didn't say new car, but I imagine that must be the intent of the bill. Even if it gets passed, I predict it will be a failure.

The problem with you guys is that you just don't get it. These idiots want a Bill that makes them feel good. THEY sold houses to people that could not afford them. What's a $25,000 car with a $4,000 clunker rebate?

The people that got us to the econimic point we are at, ARE still there, in charge, and they have more of their like minded idiots with them.

They do nothing logical or legal, if it benefits them or their special interest groups. The Name Murtha should ring a bell. This is the biggest pOS walking in Wash DC.

They want the Control. You will drive this, and you will eat this and you will make this. You will send us all of your money Too.

I believe the voucher is for new AMERICAN cars too.

read AlGore's first book "Earth in Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit", especially the end of the book that he expounds on the "Global Marshall Plan" and
"A New Common Purpose".....................there is an agenda to take people's choices away regarding personal transportation, and that the "specialty" or "aftermarket" enthusiasts will be the largest barrier to implementing the needed changes to save our planet.

Not trying to get political here, but this will have an affect on us in the near future.

Like hell it's voluntary. No one asked me if they could use my tax money to fund this crap. I didn't "volunteer" to pay for this program

Worse, stuff like this just sends a signal to the auto makers that it's OK to "make more of the same"

If they had just given us each a mill or two, instead of flushing it down the 'bankin' toilet, WE could have saved GM, Ford, Chrysler, AND Pontiac.

JULY 2008
http://www.autotrader.com/research/article/34512/cash-for-clunkers.jsp
"and you can see why a handful of states—including California, Texas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, and Virginia—have started “Cash for Clunkers” programs. Texas offers as much as $3,500 for low-income consumers to ditch their clunkers and buy a new car. California gives $1,500 to help retire vehicles that fail emissions tests. And beginning in 2009, Canada will use a similar strategy to remove 50,000 clunkers from Canadian roads."
Kind old news..probably didn't get Rush's notice back then..

Smart ass comments about k cars and minivans really show your intelligence. This is a serious issue and one more step toward removal of old cars !

The only thing politicians understand is votes and the more people who write in opposed to this the more likely it will fail. Anyone who enjoys cars should be outraged by this and anyone who thinks they will somehow avoid it is just sticking their head in the sand.

Look how organized the NRA is and the amount of things they have accomplished for gun owners.

Car owners need to have the same amount of effort to protect our cars from the government do-gooders.

The new "cash for clunker bill" gives 4500 bucks or so off the price of a new car if you trade in for a vehicle getting 4 mpg or more than the old one. This legislation is primarily aimed at those who own a 10 year old PU truck or SUV.That's how I read it anyways.Car dumb people I know don't see hot rods and vintage vehicles as clunkers or polluters.,but just some piece of noslagia driven by eccentric people.
The problem here is the Govt looks at cars as transportation, not an object of admiration by off center car nuts.
Well, our Vice Pres owns a 67 Vette, not exactly HAMB firendly but close :D

Sorry, guys. If you'll leave the politics out of your rants this thread might stay alive. Read the actual proposal:http://energycommerce.house.gov/Press_111/20090505/cashforclunkers.pdf It actually is pretty reasonable-says nothing about hotrods or the cars that are the basis of traditional rods or customs.

All government is not bad, there are a ton of crappy, poorly built, unsafe and inefficient cars out there-a reason Detroit's in trouble now- and if folks can't afford it, they won't play. If the government help allows folks on the fence to get a newer, safer, more efficient vehicle that pollutes less and keeps a fellow American working-what's your problem?

PS Please grow up!

they won't outlaw the eccentric nostalgia.........there will be a federal tax, much like the "cap and trade" to drive certain vehicles, allowing the rich, like our V.P., the ability to continue to enjoy his vintage auto.

Your right about the bill not containing language specific to the hobby, but it should contain language to protect us. And while the bill is "voluntary", it generally is heading in a direction that is not car friendly.

And to keep the auto workers in biz, maybe they should be forced to take a pay cut like I had to in my industry, or my wife had to in the tech industry.

21,000 auto workers will be taking a pay cut..losing their jobs..

The bill is to try to stimulate sales for our Auto Industry that is DYING..not to make sure anyone gets a new car..
Guys bitch about Pontiac getting the axe..and bitch about a plan to OFFER..not DEMAND..that folks with older cars..get help to buy a car...instead of just giving the car companies money. You know..try and help these companies SELL instead of take..

Somebody needs to corner these guys and explain to them the difference between a "clunker" and a restored classic car or hot rod that runs better and cleaner than when it was new...

I realize the bill is designed to stimulate car sales, but has any of the stimulus package worked with auto companies yet?? And by the way, I'm not for or against Obama, I wasn't for or against Bush, but I am against the Federal government regulating and controlling and giving "incentives" for every aspect of our lives.

How come Studebaker didn't get bailed out?
